Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene – Capsules and Tablets
Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal vision and normal skin, and to the normal function of the immune system. In supplements it comes as preformed vitamin A (retinol, retinyl palmitate) or as beta-carotene – a plant pigment the body converts into vitamin A as needed.
This category is part of Vitamins and minerals. Before choosing, it helps to know whether you need preformed vitamin A or beta-carotene, as they differ in dose and cautions.

How to choose and take it
- Add up vitamin A from all supplements – multivitamins often already contain it
- Take with a meal containing fat, as vitamin A and beta-carotene are fat-soluble
- Before summer, beta-carotene is usually started a few weeks in advance, but it does not replace sunscreen
- A slightly yellowish tint of the palms with higher beta-carotene intake is harmless and fades after stopping
When to take care
- during pregnancy or when planning one – high doses of vitamin A are not taken without a doctor’s advice
- smokers should not take high doses of beta-carotene
- do not take extra vitamin A during retinoid treatment (e.g. isotretinoin for acne)
- with liver disease, consult a doctor
Pharmacist’s adviceFor most people who simply want to support their skin and vision, beta-carotene is the more practical choice, because the body converts only as much as it needs. Keep high-dose preformed vitamin A for situations where a doctor recommends it. If you also take a multivitamin, show us both packs – we can quickly check whether together they exceed the recommended intake. |
