Serrapeptase – Proteolytic Enzymes in Capsules and Tablets - page 2
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme (an enzyme that breaks down proteins) obtained by bacterial fermentation. This category contains food supplements with serrapeptase – Serapinn, RecoForte, Hysera, Flamin, Serrax, Serrap MD Forte, Aboserap, Serazyn, Serapept 250 and Dr. Viton – and combinations with other enzymes (Seratrix, Chymolit Forte, Bomelinn with bromelain). It is part of the Muscle pain and inflammation category.
How to compare products
The amount of serrapeptase is expressed in activity units – SPU or IU. The higher the number, the higher the activity per capsule, so products of different strength are compared by total daily dose, not by number of capsules.
| Strength per capsule | Examples | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 60,000 SPU / IU | Hysera tablets, Flamin, Serazyn, Serrax Forte 60,000 | Packs of 20–30, for a longer period |
| 120,000 SPU / IU | Serrap MD Forte, Aboserap, Serrax Forte 120,000 | Smaller packs (10 capsules) |
| 250,000 SPU | RecoForte, Serrax Ultra Forte, Serapept 250 | Highest strength; RecoForte in packs of 10, 20 and 30 |
| Enzyme combinations | Seratrix, Chymolit Forte, Bomelinn | Serrapeptase or other enzymes (e.g. bromelain) in one product |
Serrapeptase is taken on an empty stomach – about 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal – because the enzyme is sensitive to stomach acid. That is why most products come in gastro-resistant capsules, which should not be opened or chewed.
Who should be careful
- people taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel)
- before planned surgery or tooth extraction – stop as advised by your doctor
- pregnant and breastfeeding women and children – insufficient safety data
- people with stomach ulcers or bleeding disorders
Pharmacist's adviceSerrapeptase is usually taken in cycles of several weeks, as directed by the manufacturer. Keep to the recommended daily dose and do not combine several enzyme products at the same time. If swelling, pain or redness lasts more than a few days, gets worse or comes with fever, see a doctor – a food supplement does not replace an examination. |

Frequently asked questions
What is serrapeptase?
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from Serratia bacteria. In food supplements it is produced by fermentation and comes in gastro-resistant capsules or tablets.
How long can serrapeptase be taken?
Usually in cycles of 2 to 8 weeks, as directed on the pack. For longer use, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
How should serrapeptase be taken?
On an empty stomach, about 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal, with a glass of water. Swallow the capsule whole.
What do SPU and IU mean?
They are units of enzyme activity. When comparing products, look at the total daily dose in units, not the number of capsules.
