0.00 RSD

Canesten 3, 200 mg vaginal tablets contain clotrimazole, an antifungal medicine used for the three-day treatment of candidal vaginitis, commonly known as vaginal thrush.

Each pack contains three vaginal tablets with 200 mg of clotrimazole per tablet and one applicator. One tablet is inserted into the vagina on each of three consecutive evenings.

Important warning
Itching, burning and abnormal discharge are not always caused by Candida. Offensive-smelling discharge, fever, lower-abdominal or back pain, nausea or vaginal bleeding may indicate another condition requiring examination. Contact a doctor if symptoms have not resolved within seven days, become worse or return within two months.

Symptoms commonly associated with vaginal thrush

  • intense vaginal or vulval itching;
  • burning, redness and irritation;
  • thick, whitish and commonly curd-like discharge;
  • discomfort or burning during urination;
  • discomfort during sexual intercourse.

Vaginal thrush does not usually cause a strong offensive smell. Grey, yellow or green discharge, unpleasant odour or pelvic pain may indicate bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis or another condition that will not respond to clotrimazole.

How are the tablets used?

Insert one vaginal tablet as deeply as possible at bedtime for three consecutive evenings.

  1. Wash and dry your hands.
  2. Place the tablet into the applicator according to the enclosed instructions.
  3. Lie on your back with your legs slightly bent.
  4. Carefully insert the applicator deeply into the vagina.
  5. Press the plunger to release the tablet.
  6. After use, dismantle the applicator and wash it with warm, but not boiling, water and soap.
  7. Wash your hands again.

Complete all three applications even when itching or burning improves after the first or second dose.

What if the tablet does not dissolve?

Moisture is required for a vaginal tablet to dissolve completely. In women with vaginal dryness, small undissolved pieces may come out of the vagina.

Insert the tablet as deeply as possible at bedtime. Consult a doctor or pharmacist about a vaginal cream if it repeatedly fails to dissolve overnight.

Use during menstruation

Use during menstruation is not recommended because menstrual flow may remove the medicine and reduce its effect. Complete the three-day course before menstruation begins.

When is medical advice required before treatment?

  • a temperature of 38°C or higher;
  • lower-abdominal, pelvic, back or shoulder pain;
  • nausea or vomiting;
  • offensive-smelling vaginal discharge;
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding;
  • sores, blisters or marked genital swelling;
  • a first episode or uncertainty that the symptoms are caused by thrush;
  • frequent or recurrent infections.
Seek urgent medical assessment
High fever, severe pelvic pain, vomiting, marked weakness, heavy bleeding, offensive-smelling discharge or shoulder pain are not typical symptoms of uncomplicated vaginal thrush.

External symptoms and treatment of a partner

When the vulva and surrounding skin are also affected, an appropriate external antifungal cream may be required for itching and redness, following advice from a doctor or pharmacist.

A partner without symptoms does not require routine treatment. A partner with itching, redness or inflammation of the glans or foreskin should seek advice about local treatment.

Sex, tampons and other vaginal products

During the three-day course:

  • do not use tampons;
  • do not use vaginal douches;
  • do not use spermicides or another vaginal product;
  • avoid vaginal intercourse while the infection and treatment are present.

When vaginal tablets are combined with an external Canesten cream, the cream base may temporarily reduce the reliability of latex condoms and diaphragms. Check the specific cream instructions and use additional protection as professionally advised.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Canesten 3 may be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision.

During pregnancy, insert the tablet with clean fingers and do not use the applicator, in order to avoid mechanical injury.

Interactions

Tell the doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, particularly oral:

  • tacrolimus;
  • sirolimus.

Vaginal clotrimazole may increase blood concentrations of these immunosuppressants, and additional monitoring may be required.

Possible side effects

  • vulvovaginal itching, burning, redness or irritation;
  • discomfort, pain or swelling at the application site;
  • vaginal discharge, peeling or bleeding;
  • abdominal pain or nausea;
  • rash or hives.
Stop treatment and seek urgent help for:
  • swelling of the face, tongue or throat;
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • a severe rash or hives;
  • fainting or a sudden fall in blood pressure;
  • severe pain, swelling or bleeding.

Missed dose

If an evening dose is forgotten, it may be inserted the following morning or when remembered. Do not use two vaginal tablets together to make up for a missed dose.

When should symptoms improve?

Itching and burning may begin to improve during the first few days, but the full three-day course must be completed.

Consult a doctor if symptoms do not clearly improve within seven days, become worse, return within two months or occur repeatedly.

Pharmacist’s advice
Canesten 3 is intended for symptoms consistent with uncomplicated vaginal thrush. Thick white discharge and itching are more suggestive of Candida, whereas an unpleasant odour, grey or green discharge and pelvic pain require examination. Complete all three evening doses and do not use tampons, vaginal douches or another intravaginal product during treatment. Products intended to restore vaginal flora are introduced separately after the antifungal course, rather than at the same time as clotrimazole.
