WAYA StopReflux 14 sachets is a medical device in the form of a liquid oral suspension intended to relieve symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, including heartburn, burning behind the breastbone and regurgitation of acidic stomach contents into the oesophagus and mouth.

The formula combines magnesium alginate, calcium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate with sodium hyaluronate and chondroitin sulphate. When it comes into contact with the stomach contents, the alginate forms a gel that rises above the stomach contents and creates a physical anti-reflux barrier.

The carbonates also help neutralise excess acid, while hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate are included to coat and protect the oesophageal mucosa. The product acts locally and mechanically but does not remove the underlying cause of chronic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

How does WAYA StopReflux work?

Ingredient or group Role in the formula What the user may expect
Magnesium alginate Forms a gel after contact with the stomach contents. The gel creates a physical barrier above the stomach contents and reduces their movement into the oesophagus.
Calcium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate React with stomach acid and participate in forming the floating gel. Help neutralise excess acid and relieve the burning sensation.
Sodium hyaluronate Hyaluronic component intended to coat the mucosal surface. Contributes to a protective, moisturising film on the oesophageal mucosa.
Chondroitin sulphate Complements the mucoadhesive protective layer. Helps protect the mucosal surface exposed to refluxed stomach contents.

Directions for use

  1. Shake the sealed sachet thoroughly before use.
  2. Open the sachet immediately before administration.
  3. Pour the contents of one sachet directly into the mouth.
  4. Do not dilute the suspension with water or another drink.
  5. Take one sachet after main meals and before bedtime, or as advised by a physician.
  6. Do not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after administration.
  7. Use the complete contents immediately after opening.
  8. Do not retain an opened or partially used sachet.
  9. Do not exceed the use stated in the instructions or advised by the physician.

Use with other medicines

Alginates and carbonates may affect the absorption of certain medicines. As a general precaution, do not take other oral medicines at exactly the same time as WAYA StopReflux.

An interval of at least two hours is commonly recommended, although certain antibiotics, levothyroxine, iron preparations and osteoporosis medicines may require a different or longer interval.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist to check the correct schedule if regular medication is being used.

Important information and warnings

  • carefully read the enclosed medical-device instructions before use;
  • intended for adults and children over 12 years of age;
  • use in children under 12 requires prior medical advice;
  • pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a physician before use;
  • do not use in case of allergy or hypersensitivity to any ingredient;
  • do not use if the outer packaging or an individual sachet is damaged;
  • do not use after the expiry date;
  • do not use continuously for more than 30 days without medical advice;
  • seek medical assessment if symptoms fail to improve or regularly return;
  • people with kidney disease, electrolyte disorders or restricted potassium or calcium intake should seek medical advice;
  • do not combine multiple alginate or antacid products without pharmacist advice;
  • keep out of reach of children.

When is medical assessment required?

  • heartburn occurs every day or frequently wakes the user at night;
  • symptoms continue for more than two to four weeks;
  • swallowing is difficult or painful;
  • food appears to become stuck in the oesophagus;
  • vomiting is persistent;
  • vomit contains blood or resembles coffee grounds;
  • stools are black, tarry or contain blood;
  • there is unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite;
  • new, severe or unexplained chest pain occurs;
  • chest pain is accompanied by breathlessness, sweating or pain spreading to the arm, back or jaw.

Realistic expectations

WAYA StopReflux is intended for symptomatic relief by creating a physical barrier and partially neutralising acid. It should not be promoted as a permanent cure for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

The medical device does not replace proton-pump inhibitors, H2 blockers or another treatment prescribed by a physician. Prescribed treatment should not be stopped or changed because of temporary symptom improvement.

Frequent symptoms may require assessment of diet, body weight, medicines that worsen reflux, hiatal hernia and the condition of the oesophageal mucosa.

Pharmacist advice

Take the sachet after the meal rather than before it, because the aim is for the alginate layer to form above the stomach contents. Avoid food and drink for at least 30 minutes afterwards.

For night-time reflux, finish the evening meal at least two to three hours before lying down. Raising the entire head of the bed or using a wedge may be more effective than placing several ordinary pillows only beneath the head.

Identify the foods that genuinely trigger symptoms. Common triggers include large fatty meals, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, carbonated drinks, spicy food and late dinners, but unnecessarily restrictive diets should be avoided.

If omeprazole, pantoprazole or another proton-pump inhibitor is being used, WAYA StopReflux may sometimes be considered as additional symptomatic support. The timing and duration of the combination should be checked with a doctor or pharmacist.

Difficulty or pain when swallowing is not ordinary heartburn. Although these symptoms may be associated with reflux, they require medical assessment and should not simply be masked with an anti-reflux product.

Some painkillers, blood-pressure medicines, sedatives and other products may worsen reflux. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.
