What is a flu vaccine for?

A flu vaccine prompts the body to build protection against the influenza viruses expected in the season. The composition of the vaccine changes every year according to the recommendations for the season, so vaccination is carried out once a year, before or at the beginning of the flu season.

The dose and number of doses for children are determined by age and previous vaccination, strictly according to the approved leaflet of the vaccine and the paediatrician's decision – this page does not give dosing recommendations.

Status of Vaxigrip vaccines according to ALIMS

  • Vaxigrip, suspension for injection in a 0.5 mL pre-filled syringe (packs of 1 and 20 syringes): authorisation ceased on 22 June 2020.
  • Vaxigrip Junior (0.25 mL): never registered in Serbia.
  • Vaxigrip® trivalent: new authorisation RS-H-000202-001 of 12 June 2025, for a 0.5 mL pre-filled syringe. The age group for which it is approved is stated in the leaflet of that vaccine – check with your paediatrician.

What is available in Serbia?

The availability of flu vaccines for children depends on the season and procurement. For information about vaccinating your child, please contact your paediatrician or health centre – they know which vaccine is available in a given season and approved for your child's age.

Pharmacist's advice

Do not obtain a flu vaccine for your child on your own – the paediatrician checks age, health and previous vaccination, and then decides on the vaccine and the number of doses.

After vaccination, stay briefly at the health facility for observation, and at home check your child's temperature from time to time.
