Vaxigrip is an influenza vaccine. In Serbia it is currently authorised as VaxigripTetra – a quadrivalent inactivated vaccine that protects against four strains of influenza virus (15 micrograms of haemagglutinin of each strain per 0.5 mL dose). The strain composition is updated every season according to World Health Organization recommendations.
It comes as a suspension for injection in a 0.5 mL pre-filled syringe; the marketing authorisation holder is Amicus SRB, and the vaccine is given in a healthcare facility. It can be given to people over 6 months of age and to pregnant women. Vaccination is decided by the doctor, in line with official recommendations.
Important warning
- Supply status: the vaccine is administered in a healthcare facility.
- It must not be given if you are allergic to the vaccine components or substances present in traces: eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), neomycin, formaldehyde, octoxinol 9.
- In an illness with fever or an acute illness, vaccination is postponed until recovery.

What it is used for
To protect people over 6 months of age against influenza. Protection develops after 2–3 weeks. Vaccination is recommended every year because the virus strains change. When given during pregnancy, it protects the pregnant woman and the baby from birth until 6 months of age.
How it is given
- adults and children from 6 months to 17 years: one 0.5 mL dose,
- children under 9 years who have not been vaccinated against flu before: a second 0.5 mL dose after at least 4 weeks,
- the vaccine is given by a doctor or nurse into a muscle or under the skin; never into a vein,
- it can be given at the same time as other vaccines, but into different limbs.
The greatest risk of flu is from October to March; if you were not vaccinated in autumn, vaccination still makes sense later, until spring.
Warnings
- tell your doctor if you have a weakened immune system or take immunosuppressants, corticosteroids or are receiving radiotherapy – the response to the vaccine may be weaker,
- bleeding problems or a tendency to bruise,
- fainting with previous injections,
- in the days after vaccination some blood tests may give false positive results – tell your doctor,
- like any vaccine, it may not protect everyone who is vaccinated; use in children under 6 months is not recommended.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
The influenza vaccine can be used in all stages of pregnancy and during breast-feeding, as decided by the doctor.
Possible side effects
- very common in adults: headache, muscle pain, malaise, pain at the injection site,
- common: fever, shivering, redness, swelling and hardness at the injection site,
- rare: severe allergic reactions.
When to seek help immediately
- rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat,
- difficult or shallow breathing, fast heartbeat, cold and clammy skin, dizziness or fainting.
Pharmacist’s Advice
It is best to get vaccinated in autumn, before the flu season starts, because protection takes 2–3 weeks to develop. The vaccine is given every year.
If you are allergic to eggs or have reacted to a previous vaccine, tell your doctor before vaccination. After vaccination, wait about 15 minutes at the facility.
Mild pain at the injection site and tiredness are common and pass within 1–2 days; a cold compress helps. If you have a fever or an acute illness, postpone vaccination.
