Uricin – what is it used for and how should it be taken?
Uricin may be prescribed for acute uncomplicated cystitis when commonly recommended antibiotics cannot be used, complicated cystitis, complicated urinary tract infections other than complicated pyelonephritis, bacterial prostatitis, urethritis and epididymo-orchitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
The usual adult regimen stated in the official documentation is 400 mg twice daily. Uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections may be treated for three days, while other urinary infections generally require seven to ten days.
This is not a self-treatment or self-dosing guide. The doctor determines the dose, duration and suitability according to the diagnosis, kidney function, culture results and antimicrobial-susceptibility findings.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- Take it at least one hour before or two hours after food.
- Do not take it with milk or dairy products.
- Take each dose at approximately the same time every day.
- Maintain adequate hydration unless fluid intake has been medically restricted.
- Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier.
If a dose is missed, skip it and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.
Fluoroquinolones may very rarely cause serious, long-lasting, disabling and potentially irreversible adverse effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, the senses and the central nervous system.
Stop treatment and contact a doctor immediately at the first sign of tendon pain or swelling, burning, tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, changes in vision or hearing, severe psychological changes or unusual severe tiredness.
For uncomplicated cystitis, Uricin should be used only when other commonly recommended antibacterial medicines cannot be used.
Do not take Uricin:
- if you are allergic to norfloxacin or another quinolone antibiotic;
- if a previous quinolone caused tendinitis or tendon rupture;
- during pregnancy or breastfeeding;
- in children and adolescents during growth.
Tendinitis and tendon rupture may occur during the first 48 hours of treatment or several months after treatment has ended. The risk is higher in older adults, people with kidney impairment, organ-transplant recipients and patients receiving corticosteroids.
Particular caution is required in epilepsy, kidney impairment, myasthenia gravis, prolonged QT interval, electrolyte disorders, heart disease, diabetes, aortic aneurysm or dissection and previous serious fluoroquinolone reactions.
Food, minerals and antacids
Do not take Uricin at the same time as milk, dairy products, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, aluminium-containing antacids, multivitamin and mineral products, sucralfate or didanosine. Ask a doctor or pharmacist to prepare an appropriate dosing schedule.
Important interactions may occur with corticosteroids, warfarin, theophylline, ciclosporin, probenecid, diabetes medicines, nitrofurantoin and medicines that affect heart rhythm.
Norfloxacin may slow the breakdown of caffeine. Limit coffee, energy drinks and caffeine-containing medicines during treatment.
Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, ultraviolet light and sunbeds during treatment.
Possible side effects
Possible effects include rash, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhoea, liver inflammation, changes in blood-cell counts, urinary crystals, vaginal candidiasis, mood changes, tendinitis, muscle or joint pain, neuropathy and cardiac-rhythm changes.
- tendon pain, swelling or rupture;
- burning, tingling, numbness or weakness in the limbs;
- difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- a widespread rash, blistering or peeling skin;
- severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially with blood;
- fainting or a rapid or irregular heartbeat;
- seizures, hallucinations or severe psychiatric symptoms;
- sudden severe pain in the chest, back or abdomen;

Take Uricin on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. Check the timing of antacids, minerals, multivitamins and other oral medicines before the first dose.
