What is Targocid used for?
According to the package leaflet, Targocid is used in adults and children (including newborns) to treat bacterial infections of:
- the skin and tissues under the skin (complicated soft tissue infections),
- bones and joints,
- the lungs (hospital-acquired and community-acquired pneumonia),
- the urinary system (complicated infections),
- the heart (infective endocarditis),
- the abdominal lining – peritonitis associated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis,
- the blood (bacteraemia), when associated with any of the conditions above.
Targocid can also be used as an alternative oral treatment of diarrhoea and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. When appropriate, teicoplanin is combined with other antibiotics.
How is Targocid given and dosed?
The dose and duration of treatment are decided by the doctor according to the type and severity of the infection, age, body weight and kidney function. The medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle or by infusion into a vein; in newborns and infants up to 2 months only by infusion. Usual doses according to the leaflet:
| Adults and children from 12 years – infections of skin and soft tissue, lungs and urinary tract | loading 6 mg/kg every 12 hours (first three doses), then 6 mg/kg once daily, IV or IM |
|---|---|
| Adults and children from 12 years – bone and joint infections, heart infections | loading 12 mg/kg every 12 hours (first 3–5 doses) IV, then 12 mg/kg once daily IV or IM |
| Clostridium difficile infection | 100–200 mg orally twice daily for 7 to 14 days |
| Peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis | single 6 mg/kg IV, then 20 mg/L in dialysis bags (week 1 every bag, week 2 every other bag, week 3 overnight bag) |
| Newborns and infants up to 2 months | day 1: 16 mg/kg by infusion, then 8 mg/kg once daily by infusion |
| Children from 2 months to 12 years | loading 10 mg/kg every 12 hours (first three doses) IV, then 6–10 mg/kg once daily IV |
During treatment the doctor may monitor teicoplanin levels in the blood to reach the target concentration.
Special patient groups
- Kidney impairment: after the fourth day of treatment the dose is usually reduced – in mild and moderate impairment the maintenance dose is given every second day or half the dose once daily; in severe impairment and haemodialysis every third day or one third of the dose once daily.
- Children: doses are calculated by body weight; in newborns and infants up to 2 months the medicine is given only by infusion.
- Elderly patients: dosing as in adults, adjusted to kidney function.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Targocid must not be given if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to teicoplanin or to any of the excipients.
Precautions and warnings
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to vancomycin, have had flushing of the upper body ("red man syndrome"), have a low platelet count, kidney problems or take medicines that may damage hearing and/or the kidneys.
- Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, AGEP) have been reported with teicoplanin – treatment is stopped if a serious rash occurs.
- Blood, kidney, liver and hearing tests are more likely to be needed with long-term treatment, high loading doses (12 mg/kg twice daily), kidney problems or when other medicines affecting the nervous system, kidneys or hearing are used.
- With long-term use, bacteria that are not sensitive to the antibiotic may overgrow – your doctor will monitor this.
- The medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per dose, i.e. it is essentially "sodium-free".
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking. The following are particularly important:
- aminoglycosides – must not be mixed with Targocid in the same injection; they may cause hearing and/or kidney problems;
- amphotericin B (antifungal), ciclosporin, cisplatin and diuretics such as furosemide – may cause hearing and/or kidney problems.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, your doctor will decide whether you can receive the medicine; during pregnancy there may be a risk of damage to the inner ear and kidneys of the unborn baby. Tell your doctor before treatment if you are breastfeeding – they will decide whether you can continue. Animal studies have not shown fertility problems.
Driving and using machines
Dizziness and headache are possible during treatment. If they occur, do not drive or use machines.
Possible side effects
- Common (up to 1 in 10): rash, redness, itching; pain; fever.
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): sudden, life-threatening allergic reaction; swelling and clots in a vein; bronchospasm; more infections than usual (low blood cell counts); low platelet count; raised liver enzymes and creatinine; hearing loss, ringing in the ears or a spinning sensation; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; dizziness or headache.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): flushing of the upper body; infection (abscess).
- Not known: toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, AGEP, DRESS; agranulocytosis and reduced numbers of all blood cells; kidney problems; seizures; redness, pain or swelling at the injection site.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: the medicine is given by healthcare professionals, so overdose is unlikely; if you think you have received too much or feel unwell, tell the doctor or nurse immediately.
- Missed dose: the dosing schedule is managed by the medical staff; if you are worried, ask them.
- Stopping treatment: do not stop treatment without talking to your doctor.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- difficulty breathing or wheezing, swelling, rash, itching, fever and chills (severe allergic reaction);
- blisters on the skin, in the mouth, eyes or genitals; red scaly rash with blisters and fever;
- facial rash with high fever, enlarged lymph nodes and flu-like symptoms (DRESS);
- high fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers (possible very low white blood cell count);
- hearing loss or ringing in the ears, a seizure, reduced urine output.
Pharmacist's advice
Targocid is given in hospital and the dose is adjusted to body weight and kidney function – so it is important that the doctor knows your exact weight, all medicines you take (especially diuretics, ciclosporin and medicines that may damage hearing) and whether you have ever been allergic to vancomycin.
If you notice ringing in the ears, reduced hearing, a rash or mouth ulcers during treatment, tell the medical staff immediately. Regular blood tests and drug-level monitoring are part of safe treatment and help ensure the antibiotic works strongly enough.

Frequently asked questions
Can Targocid be obtained from a pharmacy?
No. Targocid has the supply status SZ – it may be used only in an inpatient healthcare institution, where it is prepared and given by healthcare professionals.
Can Targocid be taken by mouth?
Yes, but only to treat diarrhoea and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile – in that case the solution is taken orally, usually 100–200 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days. For other infections the medicine is given by injection or infusion.
Why are blood tests done during treatment?
The doctor monitors blood counts, kidney and liver function and, if needed, hearing, as well as the teicoplanin level in the blood – especially with long-term treatment, high doses or impaired kidney function.
May I receive Targocid if I am allergic to vancomycin?
This is decided by the doctor. Always report a vancomycin allergy before treatment, because the leaflet lists it as a reason for special caution.
