Wrist and Thumb Braces – Supports, Wraps and Splints - page 2
A wrist brace or thumb orthosis is used for strains, overuse from computer work and sport, carpal tunnel complaints and pain at the base of the thumb. This category is part of Orthopedic aids – braces, orthoses, belts and includes elastic wraps with strap, supports with a thumb hole, splinted wrist braces, thumb orthoses and splints, and a wrist sling – from BORT, Mueller and others.
The main difference is how much movement the aid allows. An elastic wrap or support gives light compression and keeps the hand mobile. A splinted brace holds the wrist in a neutral position and limits bending. Thumb orthoses also enclose the thumb and stabilise its base, where pain most often appears with overuse and joint wear.

How to choose size and side
- Size is usually based on wrist circumference measured just above the wrist bone – see the manufacturer's chart in the product description
- Thumb orthoses and zip models are made separately for the left and right hand
- The brace should fit snugly, but fingers must not tingle, hurt or change colour
- For computer work and night wear splinted braces are chosen; for sport, elastic wraps that do not interfere with grip
Carpal tunnel, strain or thumb – what to watch for
For tingling in the thumb, index and middle finger, especially at night, a splinted brace that keeps the wrist straight during sleep is often recommended. With a strain, cooling (ice packs and cold compresses) and rest help in the first days, followed by a brace as you gradually return to activity. For taping see kinesiology tapes, and for elastic and fixation bandages plasters and bandages.
Pharmacist's adviceAfter a fall on an outstretched hand, pain on the thumb side of the wrist may indicate a scaphoid fracture, which is not always visible at first. In that case do not rely on a brace alone – see a doctor. If finger tingling persists, your grip weakens or you drop things, an examination is needed. Wear the brace as long as recommended and take it off from time to time to move your fingers and check the skin. |

Frequently asked questions
Which wrist brace is best for carpal tunnel?
A splinted brace that keeps the wrist in a neutral position, especially at night, is the usual choice. Agree on the final choice and wearing time with your doctor.
When is a thumb orthosis needed?
A thumb orthosis is chosen for pain and instability at the base of the thumb, overuse and recovery after a thumb injury. It stabilises the thumb while the other fingers stay free.
How long should a wrist brace be worn?
It depends on the reason: after a mild strain usually during activity until symptoms settle, in other conditions as advised by your doctor or physiotherapist.
Can a wrist brace be washed?
Most elastic supports are hand-washed in lukewarm water without fabric softener and dried away from heat. Always check the care label.
