Smecta 3 g is a powder for oral suspension. Each sachet contains 3 g of diosmectite, a purified natural clay that coats the gastrointestinal mucosa.
It is used for acute diarrhoea in adults and children over two years, together with appropriate oral rehydration. In adults, it is also approved for symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhoea and pain associated with functional bowel disease.
Smecta does not replace an oral rehydration solution. Replacing water and electrolytes is the priority, particularly in children, older people and patients with frequent watery stools or vomiting.
The medicine must not be used in infants or children aged two years or younger. Seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve after three days, become worse or are accompanied by fever or vomiting.
Smecta sachets – dosage, preparation and rehydration
Approved uses
- acute diarrhoea in adults;
- acute diarrhoea in children over two years, together with early oral rehydration;
- symptomatic treatment of chronic diarrhoea in adults;
- symptomatic treatment of pain associated with functional bowel disease in adults.
In children, Smecta is approved only for acute diarrhoea. Chronic use in children must be avoided.

Preparing the sachet
Adults: mix the contents of one sachet in approximately half a glass of water and drink immediately after preparation.
Children over two years: mix the contents in a bottle containing 50 mL of previously boiled and cooled water and use during the day, or mix thoroughly with semi-liquid food such as soup, cooked fruit, mashed vegetables or baby food.
Oral rehydration
Oral rehydration should begin early in children to prevent dehydration. Prepare each electrolyte product using exactly the stated volume of water.
Urgent assessment is required for marked thirst, dry mouth, reduced urination, sunken eyes, unusual drowsiness, rapid breathing or inability to keep liquids down.
Other medicines
Diosmectite may reduce the absorption of other oral medicines. Do not take Smecta at the same time as another medicine. When possible, leave an interval of more than two hours.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended because safety data are limited. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Possible side effects
- Common: constipation.
- Uncommon: rash and vomiting.
- Rare: hives.
- Frequency unknown: allergic reaction with redness, itching, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, fainting or collapse.
- blood in the stool or black stools;
- severe or worsening abdominal pain;
- high fever or persistent vomiting;
- marked dehydration or very little urine;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- fainting or collapse;
- diarrhoea that becomes worse or does not improve after three days.

Begin appropriate oral rehydration early. Smecta helps control symptoms but does not replace lost water, sodium and potassium.
Do not take other oral medicines at the same time. Leave an interval of more than two hours when possible.
In children, monitor fluid intake, urination, behaviour and signs of dehydration.

Does Smecta prevent dehydration?

For goods ordered up to 5.000,00 RSD, delivery charge is 260.00 RSD (VAT included). For goods over 5.000,00 RSD, shipping is free of charge.
