Rawel SR is a medicine in the form of prolonged-release tablets containing 1.5 mg of indapamide, a sulfonamide diuretic. Unlike most diuretics, indapamide causes only a slight increase in the amount of urine, and it is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults.
One tablet is taken daily, preferably in the morning. Prolonged release provides an even effect over 24 hours. In Serbia a pack of 30 tablets is authorised, and the medicine is available on prescription.
Important warning
- Supply status: the medicine is available on medical prescription only.
- The medicine must not be taken if you have low blood potassium, severe kidney or liver disease or an allergy to sulfonamides; it must not be combined with lithium.
- Sudden loss of vision or eye pain (possible fluid accumulation in the eye or raised eye pressure) requires urgent examination – without treatment it can lead to permanent vision loss.
- The medicine contains a substance that may give a positive result in a doping test.
- Follow the package leaflet and your doctor's advice. This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

What is Rawel SR used for?
According to the package leaflet, Rawel SR is intended for the treatment of high blood pressure (essential hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the strain on the heart and blood vessels. Treatment of hypertension is usually long-term, most often lifelong.
How is Rawel SR used and dosed?
- Recommended dose: one prolonged-release tablet daily, preferably in the morning.
- How to take it: swallow the tablet whole with enough water – do not break or chew it.
- Food: the medicine can be taken with or without meals.
- Higher doses are not taken: according to the summary of product characteristics, a higher dose does not increase the effect on blood pressure but only increases the excretion of salt in the urine.
- Duration: treatment of high blood pressure is usually lifelong – do not stop it without talking to your doctor.
Special patient groups
- Children and adolescents: use is not recommended because of a lack of data on safety and efficacy.
- Elderly patients: can be treated with Rawel SR when kidney function is normal or only minimally impaired; the elderly have a higher risk of dehydration.
- Kidney impairment: the medicine is contraindicated in severe impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min); such diuretics are fully effective only when kidney function is normal or minimally impaired.
- Liver impairment: the medicine is contraindicated in severe impairment; caution is needed in milder disorders.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
- allergy to indapamide, any other sulfonamide or any of the excipients;
- severe kidney disease;
- severe liver disease or hepatic encephalopathy;
- low blood potassium (hypokalaemia).
Precautions and warnings
Tell your doctor before starting treatment if:
- you have a liver disorder, diabetes or gout;
- you have a heart rhythm disorder or kidney disease;
- you need tests of parathyroid gland function;
- you are sensitive to sunlight or artificial UV light (photosensitivity);
- you have had an allergic reaction to penicillin or sulfonamides – the risk of fluid accumulation in the eye (choroidal effusion) or increased eye pressure, which can occur within hours to weeks of starting treatment, is higher.
The doctor may order blood tests to check sodium, potassium and calcium levels. Athletes should know that the medicine may give a positive doping test. The medicine contains lactose.
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
Rawel SR must not be taken with lithium because of the risk of increased lithium levels in the blood. Tell your doctor or pharmacist especially if you take:
- medicines for heart rhythm disorders (quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, ibutilide, dofetilide, digitalis), bepridil and cisapride;
- medicines for mental disorders (tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, neuroleptics);
- the antibiotics sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin and intravenous erythromycin, as well as halofantrine, pentamidine, mizolastine, difemanil and injectable vincamine;
- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen) or high doses of acetylsalicylic acid;
- ACE inhibitors, potassium-sparing diuretics (amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene), oral corticosteroids, tetracosactide, intravenous amphotericin B and stimulant laxatives;
- baclofen, allopurinol, metformin, iodinated contrast media, ciclosporin, tacrolimus and other immunosuppressants;
- calcium tablets or other calcium supplements.
Food and drink: taking the medicine with food or non-alcoholic drinks does not significantly affect its action.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Use of Rawel SR is not recommended during pregnancy; when a pregnancy is planned or confirmed, an alternative treatment should be started as soon as possible. Indapamide passes into breast milk, so breast-feeding is not advised during treatment. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast-feeding, tell your doctor.
Driving and using machines
The medicine may cause dizziness or tiredness due to low blood pressure, more often at the start of treatment or when the dose is increased. If this happens, refrain from driving and activities that require alertness. When blood pressure is well controlled, these effects are unlikely.
Possible side effects
- Common (up to 1 in 10 patients): red raised skin rash that may itch; low blood potassium; allergic reactions, mainly of the skin, in people prone to allergies and asthma.
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): vomiting; low blood sodium (may cause dehydration and low blood pressure); small red spots on the skin (purpura); impotence.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): tiredness, headache, pins and needles, vertigo; nausea, constipation, dry mouth; increased risk of dehydration in the elderly and people with heart failure; low blood chloride and magnesium.
- Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000): changes in blood cell counts, high blood calcium, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, kidney and liver function disorders, pancreatitis, angioedema and severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
- Frequency not known: fainting, worsening of lupus, photosensitivity reactions, short-sightedness, blurred or impaired vision, choroidal effusion or acute angle-closure glaucoma, life-threatening heart rhythm disorder, hepatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, QT prolongation, raised uric acid, glucose and liver enzymes.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: if you have taken more tablets than prescribed, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. A very large dose may cause nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, cramps, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion and changes in the amount of urine.
- Missed dose: take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
- Stopping treatment: since treatment of high blood pressure is usually lifelong, always talk to your doctor before stopping.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat or limbs, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives (angioedema);
- intense rash, reddening of the whole skin, blisters, peeling skin or inflamed mucous membranes;
- sudden loss of vision or eye pain;
- palpitations, irregular heartbeat or sudden loss of consciousness;
- severe abdominal and back pain with feeling very unwell (possible pancreatitis).
Pharmacist's advice
Take Rawel SR every morning at the same time, for example with breakfast – this makes it easiest not to forget a dose. Swallow the tablet whole, because breaking it would disturb the prolonged release. Measure your blood pressure at home several times a week, at the same time of day and after a few minutes of rest, and bring the results to your check-ups.
Before buying laxatives, calcium products or non-prescription painkillers (e.g. ibuprofen), ask your pharmacist whether they can be combined with indapamide. In summer, use sun protection and tell your doctor if you notice an unusual skin reaction after sun exposure, as well as muscle cramps or marked weakness.
Availability and price
Rawel SR is a prescription-only medicine. This page is for information only – the medicine cannot be ordered online. Please ask your pharmacy about availability, price and dispensing conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Will Rawel SR make me pass urine often?
Indapamide is a diuretic, but according to the leaflet it causes only a slight increase in the amount of urine, unlike most other diuretics. That is why it is recommended to take it in the morning.
Can I take two tablets if my blood pressure is high?
No. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. According to the summary of product characteristics, higher doses do not increase the effect on blood pressure but only increase salt excretion. If your blood pressure is not well controlled, see your doctor.
Why does my doctor order blood tests during treatment?
Indapamide may lower potassium and sodium or raise calcium levels in the blood, and may also affect uric acid and blood sugar. Check-up tests help detect these changes in time.
Can I take ibuprofen while taking Rawel SR?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen) and high doses of acetylsalicylic acid are listed in the leaflet as medicines requiring special precautions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking them.
