Rantudil Forte 60 mg is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine – NSAID. Each hard capsule contains 60 mg of acemetacin.

It is used for symptomatic treatment of pain and inflammation associated with selected rheumatic diseases, lower-back pain, soft-tissue rheumatism, injuries and postoperative conditions.

Important warning
Rantudil Forte may cause stomach or intestinal ulcers, bleeding and perforation, sometimes without previous warning symptoms.

Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period required. Do not combine it with ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen, aspirin or another NSAID unless specifically instructed by a doctor.

Rantudil Forte – approved uses, dosage and major precautions

What is Rantudil Forte used for?

  • rheumatoid arthritis;
  • ankylosing spondylitis – Bechterew’s disease;
  • postoperative pain and inflammation;
  • lower-back pain;
  • inflammatory soft-tissue rheumatism;
  • pain and inflammation following an injury.

The medicine reduces symptoms but does not remove the underlying cause of a rheumatic or musculoskeletal condition.

How is it taken?

Patients Single dose Total daily dose
Adults One 60 mg capsule One to three capsules daily – 60–180 mg
Older patients Lowest effective dose Shortest possible treatment with closer monitoring

Swallow the capsule whole with sufficient liquid during a meal. Do not open, crush or chew it.

The doctor determines the exact dose and duration. Do not increase the number of capsules because pain relief is insufficient. Do not take a double dose after a missed dose.

When must it not be used?

  • allergy to acemetacin, indometacin or an excipient;
  • a previous asthma attack, bronchospasm, rhinitis, hives or another serious reaction caused by aspirin or an NSAID;
  • an active or recurrent stomach or duodenal ulcer;
  • previous gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to NSAID treatment;
  • active gastrointestinal, cerebrovascular or other bleeding;
  • a blood-cell formation disorder of unknown cause;
  • severe heart failure;
  • the final trimester of pregnancy.

Stomach and intestinal safety

The risk of ulceration, bleeding and perforation is greater in older patients, people with a previous ulcer, patients using higher doses and those taking corticosteroids, anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines or SSRI antidepressants.

Rantudil Forte may aggravate ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Severe stomach pain, vomiting blood or black stools require immediate discontinuation and medical assessment.

Heart, blood pressure and kidneys

NSAIDs may cause fluid retention, swelling and increased blood pressure. Higher doses and prolonged treatment may be associated with a small increase in the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Particular caution is required in patients with hypertension, heart failure, coronary disease, peripheral arterial disease, a previous stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol or a history of smoking.

Kidney function, liver tests and the complete blood count may need to be monitored during prolonged treatment.

Important interactions

  • other NSAIDs and aspirin;
  • anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines;
  • corticosteroids and SSRI antidepressants;
  • ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-receptor blockers and diuretics;
  • potassium-sparing diuretics;
  • digoxin, phenytoin and lithium;
  • methotrexate;
  • ciclosporin;
  • triamterene and diflunisal;
  • penicillin antibiotics.
Do not combine several pain medicines
Taking another NSAID together with Rantudil Forte does not necessarily improve pain control but substantially increases the risk of ulcers, bleeding and kidney injury.

Check the ingredients of combination products for pain, colds and fever, as they may already contain an NSAID.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility

During the first six months of pregnancy, use is permitted only when considered necessary by a doctor and at the lowest dose for the shortest period.

Use after week 20 may affect the unborn baby’s kidneys and heart and reduce amniotic fluid. Rantudil Forte must not be used during the final trimester.

Acemetacin and its metabolites pass into breast milk, so treatment should be avoided during breastfeeding whenever possible.

NSAIDs may temporarily reduce female fertility.

Possible side effects

  • nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea;
  • indigestion, bloating and loss of appetite;
  • gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding or perforation;
  • headache, drowsiness, tiredness and dizziness;
  • agitation;
  • rash, itching and hives;
  • increased liver enzymes;
  • swelling and increased blood pressure;
  • kidney impairment;
  • blood-cell abnormalities.
Seek urgent medical help for:
  • vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds;
  • black, tarry or bloody stools;
  • severe or sudden abdominal pain;
  • swelling of the face, tongue or throat;
  • difficulty breathing or wheezing;
  • a widespread blistering or peeling rash;
  • chest pain, one-sided weakness or impaired speech;
  • markedly reduced urination, blood in the urine or severe swelling;
  • yellow skin or eyes;
  • fever, repeated infections, bruising or unusual bleeding;
  • an accidental overdose.

Pharmacist’s advice
Take the capsule during a meal and with sufficient water. Food may reduce local stomach irritation, but it does not eliminate the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Tell the pharmacist if you use aspirin, clopidogrel, an anticoagulant, corticosteroid, blood-pressure medicine, diuretic or antidepressant before purchasing any additional pain medicine.

Supplements for joints are not substitutes for prescribed treatment of acute pain and inflammation.
