Pressing is a medicine containing loratadine – an antihistamine (H1 receptor blocker). It blocks the action of histamine, a substance the body produces when you are allergic to something, and so relieves allergy symptoms. Its effect lasts all day, so the medicine is taken once daily.

Pressing is made by Hemofarm AD Vršac in two forms: 10 mg tablets (for adults and children aged 6 and over weighing more than 30 kg) and 5 mg/5 mL syrup (for adults and children from 2 years). It is available without prescription and is used for allergic rhinitis (e.g. hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).

Important warning

  • Supply status: the medicine is available without medical prescription.
  • It must not be taken in case of allergy to loratadine or any of the excipients.
  • Do not take it for at least two days before skin allergy tests, as it may affect the results.
  • The tablets are not intended for children under 6 years or weighing 30 kg or less; the syrup must not be given to children under 2 years.
  • If you do not feel better or feel worse after a few days, contact a doctor. This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

What is Pressing used for?

According to the package leaflets, Pressing is used to relieve:

  • symptoms of allergic rhinitis (e.g. hay fever) – sneezing, runny nose, itching and irritation in the nose, burning or itching eyes;
  • symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) – itching and redness, with a reduction in the number and size of raised skin lesions.
  • The syrup is intended for adults and children over 2 years of age.

How is Pressing taken and dosed?

Take the medicine exactly as described in the leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. It can be taken with or without food. According to the leaflets:

  • Tablets – adults: one tablet (10 mg) once daily with a glass of water.
  • Tablets – children aged 6 and over weighing more than 30 kg: one tablet once daily with a glass of water. For children under 6 or weighing 30 kg or less, more suitable forms (syrup) are available.
  • Syrup – adults and children over 12: 10 mL (10 mg) once daily.
  • Syrup – children aged 2 to 12: body weight over 30 kg – 10 mL (10 mg) once daily; body weight 30 kg or less – 5 mL (5 mg) once daily.
  • The score line on the tablet is only to help break it for easier swallowing, not to divide it into equal doses.

Special patient groups

  • Severe liver disease: tablets – adults and children over 30 kg: one tablet every other day; syrup – initially 10 mL (10 mg) every other day (over 30 kg) or 5 mL (5 mg) every other day (30 kg or less). Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use.
  • Impaired kidney function and elderly patients: no dose adjustment is needed.
  • Children under 2 years: safety and efficacy have not been established – use is not recommended.

Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used

  • allergy (hypersensitivity) to loratadine or any of the excipients.

Precautions and warnings

  • severe liver disease – talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine (a lower starting dose is needed);
  • skin allergy tests – stop taking it at least two days beforehand;
  • the tablets contain lactose and the syrup contains sucrose – if you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor;
  • the syrup contains propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation and alcohol-like symptoms.

Interactions with other medicines, food and drink

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take. According to the leaflets:

  • medicines that affect liver enzymes that break down medicines (CYP3A4 or CYP2D6 inhibitors) may increase loratadine levels and the possibility of side effects, although no increase in side effects was seen in clinical studies;
  • increased loratadine levels have been reported with ketoconazole (antifungal), erythromycin (antibiotic) and cimetidine (ulcer medicine), without clinically significant changes, including ECG;
  • Food and alcohol: the medicine can be taken regardless of meals; loratadine does not increase the effects of alcohol.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

  • Pregnancy: as a precaution, avoiding the medicine during pregnancy is recommended.
  • Breast-feeding: do not take the medicine while breast-feeding, as loratadine passes into breast milk.

Driving and using machines

  • In clinical studies no impairment of driving ability was observed. The medicine has no or negligible influence, but very rarely some people feel drowsy – in that case do not drive or use machines.

Possible side effects

  • Most common in adults and children over 12: drowsiness, headache, increased appetite and insomnia.
  • Most common in children aged 2 to 12: headache, nervousness (restlessness) and tiredness.
  • Very rare: severe allergic reactions (including angioedema and anaphylactic reaction), dizziness, convulsions, fast or irregular heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), abnormal liver function, fine rash, hair loss, tiredness.
  • Frequency not known: weight gain.

Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment

  • Overdose: serious problems are not expected, but if you have taken more than the recommended dose, contact a doctor or pharmacist immediately. Drowsiness, fast heartbeat and headache have been reported.
  • Missed dose: take it as soon as possible and then continue on your usual schedule; if it is nearly time for the next dose, continue with the recommended regimen. Never take a double dose.
  • Stopping treatment: your doctor or pharmacist will advise you when to stop.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing (severe allergic reaction);
  • convulsions;
  • fast or irregular heartbeat;
  • yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (possible liver disorder);
  • symptoms that do not improve or get worse after a few days.

Pharmacist's advice

Pressing works all day, so one dose a day is enough – ideally at the same time every day. In seasonal hay fever, symptoms are usually strongest during flowering; ask a pharmacist when to start and how long to take the medicine.

In children, the syrup dose depends on body weight: children weighing 30 kg or less get 5 mL, heavier children 10 mL once daily. Measure only with the spoon provided and use an opened bottle within 28 days (store below 25 °C).

If you have a skin allergy test scheduled, stop Pressing at least two days beforehand. Rinsing the nose with sea water and avoiding allergens can complement treatment, and if symptoms do not settle within a few days, see a doctor.
