Pipem was a medicine in hard capsules containing pipemidic acid, 200 mg per capsule. Pipemidic acid belongs to the quinolone group and acts as a urinary antiseptic. It was manufactured by Hemofarm AD Vršac and was available on prescription.

What was Pipem used for?
According to the summary of product characteristics, Pipem was intended for the treatment of infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to pipemidic acid:
- acute and chronic infections of the lower urinary tract
- prevention of recurrent lower urinary tract infections
The duration and method of treatment were decided by a doctor; this page does not give recommendations for using a medicine that is no longer on the market.
Important safety information from the official documents
- The medicine must not be used in case of hypersensitivity to pipemidic acid or other quinolones, a history of tendinopathy caused by fluoroquinolones or pipemidic acid, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, or in children under 15 years.
- Very rarely, inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) may occur, especially of the Achilles tendon and more often in older people, and it can lead to tendon rupture.
- Breastfeeding was contraindicated if G6PD deficiency was suspected in the infant.
- Patients were advised to see a doctor immediately in case of tendon pain or any serious side effect.
What is available in Serbia?
Since 2019, no new authorisation has been issued in Serbia for any medicine containing pipemidic acid (the authorisations for Palin and Pipegal also ceased). Urinary infections are now treated with other antibiotics chosen by the doctor based on urinalysis, urine culture and your state of health.

When to seek medical help immediately?
- fever, chills or pain in the lower back/flank
- blood in the urine
- nausea and vomiting together with urinary symptoms
- pain or swelling of a tendon (e.g. the Achilles tendon) during or after antibiotic treatment
- urinary symptoms during pregnancy or in a child
Pharmacist's advice
If urinary symptoms keep coming back, do not take leftover antibiotics from your home medicine cabinet – a urine culture shows which medicine will actually work.
Along with the treatment prescribed by your doctor, drink enough fluids and do not postpone urination.
Availability and price
Pipem capsules are not marketed in Serbia and cannot be bought in pharmacies, including ApotekaOnline. No price is available because the medicine has no valid authorisation.

Frequently asked questions
Can Pipem be bought in Serbia?
No. The authorisation for Pipem ceased on 25 April 2019 (ALIMS decision 515-01-00113-19-001), and no new authorisation has been issued.
Is there a replacement for Pipem with the same substance?
No. There is currently no registered medicine with pipemidic acid in Serbia. The doctor chooses another antibiotic based on test results and your condition.
Who was not allowed to use Pipem?
According to the official documents: people hypersensitive to quinolones, people with previous quinolone-related tendinopathy, people with G6PD deficiency and children under 15 years.
Can cranberry products replace an antibiotic?
No. Food supplements may support the urinary tract, but they do not treat a bacterial infection – that requires an examination and treatment decided by a doctor.

When picking up the product, the buyer is obliged to check for any damage and immediately advertise it to the courier who delivered the goods, or refuse to take over the shipment, which shows the external damage. When picking up the product, the customer is required to sign the delivery note taken by the Daily Express delivery worker. The delivery note is considered to be a receipt and delivery note.
The courier service delivers the goods to the address, ie. does not bring into the living space.

Delivery of items purchased on the site www.apotekaonline.rs is made exclusively through the Daily Express courier service in the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Delivery outside the territory of the Republic of Serbia, ie export of goods, is done exclusively through the service of DHL and PostExport Post of Serbia.

For goods ordered up to 5.000,00 RSD, delivery charge is 350.00 RSD (VAT included). For goods over 5.000,00 RSD, shipping is free of charge.
