How is parsley leaf tea from Institute “Dr Josif Pančić” prepared and what should you keep in mind?

Peršun list (parsley leaf) is a single-herb tea from the Belgrade Institute for Medicinal Plants Research “Dr Josif Pančić”. The pack contains 50 g of dried parsley leaf (Petroselini folium) of the species Petroselinum crispum, from the carrot family (Apiaceae).

Parsley is best known as a culinary herb, but its dried leaf is also traditionally used as a tea. The manufacturer states that parsley leaf tea is used as a remedy to ease urination, i.e. as a mild agent that promotes the excretion of urine.

Parsley leaf is also an ingredient of several tea blends from the same manufacturer (No. 12, 14, 18, 19, 83 and 84). As a single-herb tea it suits those who want parsley alone, without other herbs or flavourings. It is a herbal tea, not a medicine.

Key benefits:

  • Single-herb tea – only dried parsley leaf, without flavourings or additives.
  • Traditionally used as a mild agent to promote the excretion of urine.
  • Easy preparation: one teaspoon of leaf per cup (200 ml) of boiling water.
  • 50 g pack of loose tea.
  • Made by the Serbian Institute “Dr Josif Pančić”.

The essential oil gives parsley leaf its typical aroma and taste. The manufacturer warns that larger amounts of essential oil can irritate the digestive organs and kidney tissue, so the recommended amount should not be exceeded.

How to use

Preparation according to the manufacturer:

  • Pour a cup (200 ml) of boiling water over one teaspoon of parsley leaf.
  • Cover the vessel and leave to stand for 10–15 minutes.
  • Strain and drink two cups of tea a day.

Who is it for?

The tea is intended for adults who want to drink parsley leaf as a herbal tea that traditionally promotes the excretion of urine. According to the manufacturer, there are not enough reliable data on use in children, so ask a doctor or pharmacist before giving it to a child.

Important notes

  • Not recommended without medical supervision in kidney damage or during pregnancy (manufacturer's note).
  • Do not use in inflammatory kidney disease or in swelling (oedema) caused by reduced heart or kidney function.
  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day while using the tea.
  • Allergic reactions are rare; people with fair skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Pain or burning when passing urine, blood in the urine, fever or pain in the flanks are reasons to see a doctor – a herbal tea does not replace treatment.

Pharmacist's advice:

Prepare parsley leaf tea with a teaspoon, not a tablespoon – parsley contains essential oil and more is not better. Two cups a day are enough, and drink water alongside them, because a tea that promotes urination should be taken with an adequate fluid intake.

If you are pregnant, have kidney disease or swollen legs, do not drink the tea without agreeing it with your doctor. If burning when passing urine, blood in the urine or fever appear, do not postpone a check-up – these signs need a medical assessment, not only a herbal tea.
