Panlax 5 mg is a non-prescription medicine containing bisacodyl. It is a stimulant or contact laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation.
Bisacodyl acts locally in the large intestine. It stimulates bowel movement, increases the amount of water in the intestinal contents and helps produce a softer stool. Gastro-resistant tablets generally begin to act 6–12 hours after administration, which is why they are usually taken in the evening.
Panlax is intended for occasional and short-term use. Do not take it continuously for more than five consecutive days without investigating the cause of constipation. Prolonged or excessive use may cause dehydration, loss of potassium and other electrolytes, chronic diarrhoea and muscle weakness.

What is Panlax used for?
Panlax is used for short-term relief of constipation involving hard stools, difficulty passing stools or a feeling of incomplete emptying.
Under medical supervision, it may also be used before diagnostic procedures, before or after surgery and in other conditions requiring easier bowel evacuation.
The dosage used for examination or surgical preparation must be prescribed by a doctor. Do not independently take a high dose to “cleanse” the bowel.
Panlax does not reduce calorie absorption and does not help with weight loss.
How are Panlax tablets taken?
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not break, chew or crush it because its gastro-resistant coating ensures that bisacodyl is released in the large intestine.
- Adults and children older than 10 years: one or two tablets, providing 5–10 mg, once daily before bedtime.
- Start with the lowest dose of one tablet.
- Children aged 4–10 years: one tablet daily before bedtime, only after medical advice.
- Do not use in children aged four years or younger.
Stop taking Panlax when regular bowel movements have been restored.
Panlax, milk and medicines for stomach acid
Do not take Panlax at the same time as:
- milk or dairy products;
- antacid medicines;
- proton-pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or pantoprazole.
These products may cause the protective coating to dissolve too early in the stomach and may increase irritation.
Who must not take Panlax?
- people allergic to bisacodyl or another ingredient;
- patients with ileus or intestinal obstruction;
- patients with acute appendicitis;
- patients with an acute inflammatory bowel disease;
- patients with sudden or severe abdominal pain accompanied by nausea or vomiting;
- patients with severe dehydration;
- patients with certain rare hereditary intolerances to lactose, galactose, fructose or sucrose.

- pain accompanied by vomiting or fever;
- a markedly swollen and hard abdomen;
- an inability to pass wind;
- bloody or black stools;
- signs of severe dehydration.
When should the cause of constipation be investigated?
Contact a doctor if constipation persists for more than five days, if laxatives are required almost every day, if symptoms repeatedly return, if there is unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, alternating diarrhoea and constipation or a persistent change in bowel habits.
Interactions with other medicines
Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements being used, particularly:
- diuretics;
- corticosteroids;
- cardiac glycosides such as digoxin;
- other laxatives;
- liquorice-root products;
- antacids and proton-pump inhibitors.
Excessive use with diuretics, corticosteroids or liquorice may increase potassium loss. An electrolyte imbalance may increase sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Panlax may be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only after advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
Possible side effects
Common side effects include abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea.
Vomiting, abdominal or anorectal discomfort, dizziness and small amounts of blood in the stool may occur uncommonly.
Rare reactions include dehydration, colitis including ischaemic colitis, fainting and a severe allergic reaction.
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- severe or bloody diarrhoea;
- marked dizziness or loss of consciousness;
- severe thirst and reduced urination.
Overdose and missed dose
An excessive dose may cause watery diarrhoea, severe cramps and substantial loss of water, potassium and other electrolytes. Contact a doctor or pharmacist after an overdose.
Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed tablet.
Panlax can help with occasional constipation but is not intended for daily bowel regulation. Start with the lowest dose and swallow the tablet whole with water in the evening. Maintain adequate fluid intake during the day. Dietary fibre, regular movement and not delaying the urge to use the toilet are more important for long-term bowel regularity. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, an inability to pass wind or blood in the stool are not situations for self-treatment with a laxative.

Composition, appearance and packaging
Each gastro-resistant tablet contains 5 mg of bisacodyl.
The medicine contains lactose monohydrate and sucrose. The coating also contains quinoline yellow E104 and titanium dioxide E171.
The tablets are round, coated and yellow. Each carton contains three blisters of 10 tablets.
