This medicine is currently not marketed in Serbia

  • Osvaren has no marketing authorisation in Serbia: it is not listed in the National Register of Medicines 2019 and 2021 or in the ALIMS lists 2018–2026, so it cannot be obtained from pharmacies in Serbia, including ApotekaOnline.
  • No medicine with the same combination of active substances is registered in Serbia. Other phosphate binders are registered for controlling blood phosphate (e.g. medicines with sevelamer).
  • Treatment of raised phosphate in chronic kidney disease is decided and monitored by a nephrologist.
  • This page is for information only and is not an offer to sell the medicine.

Osvaren is the name of a medicine used in some European countries as a phosphate binder – it contains calcium acetate and magnesium carbonate. Phosphate binders are taken with meals and bind phosphate from food in the gut, in order to lower blood phosphate levels in people with chronic kidney failure, most often on dialysis.

Osvaren has not been registered in Serbia in the period covered by the ALIMS registers (2019–2026), so there is no approved patient leaflet in Serbian. For this reason, this page does not give dosing or detailed medical information.

What is Osvaren, why is it not available in Serbia and which phosphate binders are used in chronic kidney disease?

Key facts about the medicine

NameOsvaren (not registered in Serbia)
Active substancescalcium acetate and magnesium carbonate
Therapeutic groupphosphate binders – medicines for hyperphosphataemia
Status in Serbiano authorisation; no medicine with the same combination is registered
Phosphate binders registered in Serbia (ALIMS lists)e.g. sevelamer – Renvela, Renagel, Remisit (prescription medicines)
Official leaflet (ALIMS)does not exist

Why is phosphate control important?

In advanced chronic kidney disease and on dialysis, the kidneys cannot excrete enough phosphate, so its blood level rises. Persistently raised phosphate contributes to bone disorders and calcium deposits in blood vessels.

Treatment includes a diet with restricted phosphorus intake, dialysis and medicines – phosphate binders. The type of binder and the dose are set by a nephrologist based on laboratory results (phosphate, calcium, magnesium, parathyroid hormone).

What is available in Serbia?

According to ALIMS authorisation lists, medicines with sevelamer (Renvela, Renagel, Remisit) are registered in Serbia; they also bind phosphate from food. This is not the same composition as Osvaren and not a 1:1 substitute – switching from one binder to another is done on the nephrologist’s assessment and with monitoring of results.

Patients on dialysis should not take food supplements containing calcium, magnesium or potassium without agreeing this with their nephrologist.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • marked muscle weakness, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
  • muscle cramps, tingling around the mouth and in the fingers
  • confusion, severe drowsiness or nausea with vomiting
  • severe constipation or abdominal pain with bloating

Pharmacist's advice

If you used Osvaren abroad, contact your nephrologist or dialysis centre – they will choose a registered phosphate binder and dose according to your results.

Phosphate binders work only if taken with meals, as instructed by your doctor. Before taking any food supplement, ask your nephrologist for advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can Osvaren be bought in Serbia?

No. Osvaren has no authorisation in Serbia and is not listed in the ALIMS registers, so it cannot be obtained from pharmacies.

What can replace Osvaren?

A medicine with the same composition is not registered in Serbia. Other phosphate binders are registered, e.g. medicines with sevelamer; the choice and dose are decided by a nephrologist.

What are phosphate binders?

They are medicines taken with a meal that bind phosphate from food in the gut, so that less phosphate is absorbed into the blood. They are used in chronic kidney disease and on dialysis.

May I take calcium or magnesium on my own instead of the medicine?

No. In patients on dialysis, calcium, magnesium and potassium supplements can be dangerous if taken without the nephrologist’s supervision.
