What is L-tyrosine?

L-tyrosine is one of the proteinogenic amino acids. Unlike essential amino acids, the human body can synthesize tyrosine from the amino acid phenylalanine.

Tyrosine is also naturally obtained from food, particularly protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts and certain cereals.

Tyrosine and neurotransmitters

L-tyrosine is a biochemical precursor from which the body can produce dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline through several metabolic steps.

Because of this physiological role, tyrosine is frequently found in supplements aimed at active adults and formulas used during periods of increased mental and physical demands.

Its physiological role should not be confused with a therapeutic effect: an L-tyrosine supplement is not a medicine for fatigue, depression, ADHD or other neurological or psychiatric disorders.

Tyrosine and the thyroid

Tyrosine also participates as a building component in the physiological synthesis of thyroid hormones. This does not mean that additional L-tyrosine automatically increases hormone production or that supplementation treats hypothyroidism.
