What is sodium butyrate?

Sodium butyrate is the sodium salt of butyric acid. Butyric acid is a short-chain saturated fatty acid naturally formed in the intestine during microbial fermentation of certain undigested carbohydrates.

Fermentable dietary fibre and resistant starch are among the dietary components associated with the natural production of short-chain fatty acids in the gut.
