When is the 22–42 cm cuff the better choice for the Omron M1 Compact and how is it fitted correctly?

The Omron 22–42 cm cuff is a replacement upper arm cuff intended for the Omron M1 Compact blood pressure monitor. It covers a wide range of upper arm circumferences, from 22 to 42 cm, so it suits people with slimmer as well as fuller upper arms.

The M1 Compact is a semi-automatic monitor: the cuff is inflated by hand with a bulb, and the device then measures and displays blood pressure and pulse on its own. The cuff and the bulb are therefore parts that can be replaced separately when they wear out or get damaged, without buying a new monitor.

Compared with the 22–32 cm cuff for the same device, this larger version is the right choice when the upper arm circumference is above 32 cm or close to that limit. A cuff of the correct size is a precondition for reliable measurement – a cuff that is too small cannot give an accurate result.

How to use

Fitting according to Omron's instructions for upper arm cuffs:

Remove tight or thick clothing from the upper arm – the cuff is placed on the bare arm.
Connect the cuff tube to the monitor and the bulb as described in the M1 Compact manual; push the plug in fully.
Put your hand through the cuff loop and position it so that the bottom edge is 1–2 cm above the inside of the elbow, with the air tube on the inside of the arm, in line with the middle finger.
Wrap the cuff firmly so that it cannot move around the arm.
Do not kink the tube during measurement; Omron recommends always measuring on the same arm.

Who is it for?

Users of the Omron M1 Compact whose cuff is worn, damaged or too small and whose upper arm circumference is between 22 and 42 cm – especially those whose arm measures more than 32 cm, so that the standard 22–32 cm cuff does not fit.

Important notes

Use the cuff only with the monitor it is intended for – Omron states that an incompatible cuff affects measurement accuracy; the compatible model is shown on the sticker next to the plug.
Do not use it on an injured arm, an arm under medical treatment, or during an IV drip or blood transfusion; it is not intended for infants, children or people who cannot express themselves.
Keep the air tube and small parts out of the reach of children because of the risk of strangulation and choking.
Wipe the cuff with a soft dry cloth or a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild neutral detergent; do not wash it, do not immerse it in water and do not use abrasive cleaners, petrol or thinners.
When disconnecting, pull the plastic plug rather than the tube itself. Store it away from extreme temperatures, humidity, direct sunlight, dust and bleach vapours.

Pharmacist's advice:

Before buying, measure your upper arm with a tape measure, halfway between the shoulder and the elbow. If it is 32 cm or more, this 22–42 cm cuff is the safer choice than the smaller one; if your arm is slim and your old cuff fitted well, the smaller version can still be right for you.

With a semi-automatic monitor, always check the bulb as well: if the cuff fills slowly or unevenly, the cause may be a worn bulb or a damaged tube rather than the cuff itself. If your readings suddenly seem unusually high or inconsistent, check the accessories first, and discuss any lasting deviation with your doctor.
