Olynth Nasal Spray contains xylometazoline hydrochloride. It constricts dilated blood vessels in the nasal mucosa and temporarily reduces swelling, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose.
Olynth is available in two strengths intended for different age groups. Olynth 0.5 mg/mL is intended for children aged 6 to 12 years, while Olynth 1 mg/mL is intended for adults and children older than 12 years.
A child aged 6 to 12 years should not be given Olynth 1 mg/mL intended for adults. The appropriate strength for this age group is Olynth 0.5 mg/mL. The products differ in concentration, the amount of medicine delivered per spray and maximum treatment duration.

What is Olynth used for?
Olynth provides short-term symptom relief in:
- a blocked nose and swollen nasal mucosa;
- acute, chronic or allergic rhinitis;
- hay fever;
- sinusitis accompanied by swollen nasal passages and difficulty breathing.
Xylometazoline temporarily reduces mucosal swelling but does not treat a viral infection, allergy or the underlying cause of sinusitis.
How should the spray be used?
- Gently clear the nose before use.
- Remove the protective cap.
- Before the first use, press the pump several times until an even spray appears.
- Keep the bottle upright.
- Insert the nozzle into one nostril, press once and breathe in gently through the nose.
- Repeat in the other nostril.
- Wipe the nozzle after use and replace the cap.
Do not hold the bottle horizontally or point it downwards during spraying. For hygiene reasons, each bottle should be used by one person only.
How long may Olynth be used?
Olynth 0.5 mg/mL should not be used for longer than five days in children aged 6–12 years. Treatment duration in a child should be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
Olynth 1 mg/mL should not be used for longer than seven days in adults and people older than 12 years.
Frequent or prolonged use may cause rebound swelling and make the nose feel even more blocked. This condition is known as rhinitis medicamentosa and may lead to repeated and increasingly frequent use of the spray. The rebound effect may begin after approximately five days.
Who must not use Olynth?
- people allergic to xylometazoline or another ingredient;
- people hypersensitive to benzalkonium chloride;
- patients with dry inflammation and crusting inside the nose – rhinitis sicca;
- patients who have undergone certain transnasal neurosurgical procedures or surgery exposing the dura mater;
- children younger than six years for Olynth 0.5 mg/mL;
- children younger than 12 years for Olynth 1 mg/mL.
When is medical advice required?
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use in people with:
- high blood pressure;
- heart or blood-vessel disease;
- long QT syndrome or a heart-rhythm disorder;
- glaucoma, particularly angle-closure glaucoma;
- an overactive thyroid gland;
- diabetes;
- phaeochromocytoma;
- an enlarged prostate;
- persistent or repeatedly recurring nasal congestion.
Interactions with other medicines
Olynth may affect blood pressure and heart function when combined with:
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors – MAO inhibitors;
- tricyclic antidepressants;
- other medicines that may increase blood pressure;
- other cold remedies containing a decongestant.
Tell the pharmacist about all nasal sprays, drops, powders and tablets being used for a cold to avoid unintentionally combining two decongestants.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Olynth should not be used during pregnancy without prior medical advice because adequate safety information in pregnant women is not available.
Use while breastfeeding is also not recommended without medical assessment because it is not known whether xylometazoline passes into breast milk.
Possible side effects
Possible adverse effects include:
- burning, irritation or dryness inside the nose;
- increased nasal swelling after the effect wears off;
- sneezing or nosebleeds;
- headache, insomnia or tiredness;
- palpitations or a rapid pulse;
- increased blood pressure;
- heart-rhythm disturbances;
- rash, itching or hypersensitivity reactions.
Hallucinations and seizures have been reported very rarely, primarily in children.
- swelling of the face, tongue, lips or throat;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- severe palpitations or an irregular heartbeat;
- fainting, seizures or impaired consciousness;
- a severe skin reaction or sudden deterioration in your general condition.
Overdose and accidental swallowing
An overdose or accidental swallowing, particularly by a child, may cause nausea, vomiting, changes in pupil size, pale or bluish skin, sweating, abnormal body temperature, a rapid, slow or irregular heartbeat, blood-pressure changes, breathing difficulty, marked drowsiness, agitation, hallucinations, seizures or coma.
Contact a doctor or emergency medical service immediately and bring the medicine packaging.
Use Olynth when the nasal mucosa is genuinely swollen and the nose is severely blocked, rather than routinely for every runny nose. The nose may first be cleaned with an isotonic saline solution. Do not continue treatment because congestion returns when the spray wears off, as this may be the first sign of rebound congestion. For a child aged 6–12 years, check that the packaging states 0.5 mg/mL and not 1 mg/mL.

Composition and packaging
Olynth 0.5 mg/mL: each millilitre contains 0.5 mg of xylometazoline hydrochloride. One 70-microlitre spray contains 0.035 mg.
Olynth 1 mg/mL: each millilitre contains 1 mg of xylometazoline hydrochloride. One 140-microlitre spray contains 0.140 mg.
Other ingredients are benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate dihydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate, sorbitol 70% and purified water.
Benzalkonium chloride may irritate the nasal mucosa.
Both strengths are supplied as 10 mL of clear, colourless solution in a glass bottle with a metered spray pump.

Which Olynth is suitable for a seven-year-old child?
Olynth 0.5 mg/mL is intended for children aged 6–12 years. Olynth 1 mg/mL must not be used in children younger than 12 years.
May an adult use Olynth 0.5 mg/mL?
The 0.5 mg/mL strength is registered for children aged 6–12 years. Olynth 1 mg/mL is intended for adults and people older than 12 years.
How often is the spray used?
One spray into each nostril as required, up to three times daily.
Can treatment be extended if the nose remains blocked?
Not without professional advice. Prolonged use increases the risk of rebound congestion and rhinitis medicamentosa.
Does Olynth cure a cold?
No. It temporarily reduces nasal swelling and helps breathing but does not eliminate the virus causing the cold.
Can several family members use the same bottle?
This is not recommended because microorganisms may be transferred through the spray nozzle.
