OLYNTH NASAL DROPS AND SPRAY

Olynth® is a nasal medicine containing the active substance xylometazoline hydrochloride, which narrows the blood vessels of the nasal lining, reduces swelling and makes breathing through the nose easier. The effect usually starts within 5 to 10 minutes and lasts up to 10 hours.

This page describes all forms and strengths of Olynth authorised in Serbia: nasal drops and nasal spray in the 0.5 mg/mL strength (for children aged 6 to 12) and the 1 mg/mL strength (for adults and children over 12), as well as Olynth HA 1 mg/mL nasal spray. The strength and form are chosen by a doctor or pharmacist according to the child’s age and the symptoms.

What it is used for

To relieve the symptoms of swelling (congestion) of the nasal lining, chronic and allergic rhinitis (including hay fever) and sinusitis.

How to use

• Drops: tilt the head slightly back, instil the prescribed number of drops, and release the rubber bulb only after the pipette has been taken out of the nose; wipe the pipette after each use.
• Spray: before first use press several times until an even mist appears; hold the bottle upright, insert the nozzle into the nostril and press once while breathing in gently through the nose; wipe the nozzle and replace the cap.
• Ask a doctor about how long to use it in children. In chronic conditions the medicine should only be used under medical supervision.

Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used

• hypersensitivity to xylometazoline or any ingredient, including benzalkonium chloride;
• dry inflammation of the nasal lining with crusting (rhinitis sicca);
• after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or other surgery exposing the dura mater;
• 0.5 mg/mL strength – children under 6 years; 1 mg/mL strength – children under 12 years.

Warnings and precautions

The medicine should only be used after careful assessment by a doctor in people who:

• take MAO inhibitors or other medicines that can raise blood pressure;
• have raised eye pressure, especially angle-closure glaucoma;
• have serious heart or blood vessel disease (e.g. coronary disease, hypertension) or long QT syndrome;
• have phaeochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, diabetes or an enlarged prostate.

Prolonged use or overdose leads to rebound swelling of the nasal lining (rhinitis medicamentosa) and possible atrophy of the mucosa. Benzalkonium chloride may irritate the nasal lining.

Interactions with other medicines

Use together with MAO inhibitors (e.g. tranylcypromine), tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants or other medicines that raise blood pressure may lead to an increase in blood pressure. For Olynth HA, complex effects on blood pressure and heart rate are also described with antihypertensives (e.g. methyldopa) and alpha- or beta-blockers.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and driving

Xylometazoline should not be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding. When used correctly no effect on driving is expected; with prolonged use or high doses, systemic effects on the heart and nervous system may reduce this ability.

Possible side effects

• burning or dryness of the nasal lining, sneezing; increased swelling of the lining when the effect wears off is common;
• uncommonly nosebleeds and hypersensitivity reactions (swelling, rash, itching);
• rarely headache, insomnia or tiredness, palpitations, fast pulse, raised blood pressure;
• very rarely arrhythmias and, especially in children, hallucinations and convulsions.

Storage

Store below 25 °C, out of the sight and reach of children. The 0.5 mg/mL drops should be used within 12 weeks of first opening and Olynth HA within 12 months; for the other forms follow the period stated in the leaflet. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.

Which Olynth is for children?

Olynth 0.5 mg/mL nasal drops and nasal spray are intended for children aged 6 to 12. The 1 mg/mL strength and Olynth HA are for adults and children over 12.

Can Olynth be used in a child under 6?

No. None of the Olynth forms authorised in Serbia is intended for children under 6 years.

How long can I use Olynth?

The 0.5 mg/mL strength for no longer than 5 days and 1 mg/mL for no longer than 7 days (Olynth HA 3–5 days), unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Why does my nose get even more blocked after longer use?

Prolonged use causes rebound swelling of the nasal lining (rhinitis medicamentosa), which is why use is limited in time.
