No-Spa 40 mg contains drotaverine hydrochloride, an antispasmodic medicine that relaxes smooth muscle.
It is used for short-term symptomatic treatment of spasmodic pain of urinary or biliary origin. No-Spa may relieve the spasm, but it does not remove a stone, treat an infection or resolve an obstruction.

No-Spa – what is it used for and how should it be taken?
No-Spa is used in adults for short-term relief of spasmodic pain associated with kidney stones, ureteric stones, uncomplicated biliary colic and stones in the gallbladder or bile ducts.
The usual average adult dose stated in the official information is 120–240 mg daily, divided into two or three doses. Treatment should be used only on medical advice and for the shortest possible period, generally one to three days.
- Swallow the tablet with sufficient water.
- Do not independently increase the number of tablets.
- Do not take a double dose after a missed tablet.
- Do not continue repeatedly treating undiagnosed abdominal pain.
If pain has not significantly improved 30 minutes after the first 40 mg dose, the dose may be repeated according to medical instructions. If the second dose is also ineffective, treatment should be stopped and a doctor contacted immediately.
No-Spa relieves spasm but does not treat infection, remove a stone or resolve obstruction of a urinary or bile duct.
Severe pain with fever, jaundice, vomiting, blood in the urine or reduced urination requires urgent medical assessment.
Do not take No-Spa in severe liver, kidney or heart failure, in children under 12 years of age or in case of allergy to drotaverine.
Particular caution is required in patients with low blood pressure. Drotaverine may reduce the antiparkinsonian effect of levodopa and worsen stiffness and tremor.
Use during pregnancy requires medical assessment. It is not recommended during breastfeeding.
Rare side effects include headache, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, constipation, palpitations, low blood pressure and allergic reactions.
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- fainting or a severe fall in blood pressure;
- a markedly irregular heartbeat;
- severe abdominal or flank pain with fever, jaundice or vomiting;
- blood in the urine or markedly reduced urination;
- pain that does not respond to the prescribed treatment.
A significant overdose may cause serious and potentially fatal cardiac rhythm and conduction disorders. Contact emergency medical services immediately.
Use No-Spa only for a short period and for a medically assessed cause of spasm. Do not continue taking tablets for several days simply because the pain temporarily improves.
Fever, jaundice, vomiting, blood in the urine or reduced urination may indicate infection or obstruction requiring urgent assessment.
