What is nettle leaf tea used for and what should you keep in mind?

Nettle leaf by the brand Planinska is a herbal material for preparing tea, in a 50 g pack. It is a single-herb tea – it contains only nettle leaf, without added herbs or flavourings.

Nettle leaf (Latin Urticae folium, from Urtica dioica and Urtica urens) is one of the best-known plants in folk use. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognises its traditional use to increase the amount of urine to flush the urinary tract in minor urinary complaints, and to relieve minor joint pain.

Nettle tea is most often drunk as part of the daily fluid intake. Because it increases urine output, it is important to know who it is not suitable for – see the important notes below.

Key benefits:

  • Single-herb tea – nettle leaf only.
  • 50 g pack for preparing many cups of tea.
  • A plant with a long tradition of use as a tea.
  • EMA recognises the traditional use of nettle leaf for flushing the urinary tract.
  • Affordable and easy to prepare.

How to use

Prepare the tea exactly as described on the pack. Usually the leaf is covered with boiling water, left to steep covered for a few minutes and then strained.

  • If you drink the tea for minor urinary complaints, drink enough fluid alongside it.
  • According to the EMA, nettle leaf should not be used for more than 2–4 weeks for urinary complaints, or for more than 4 weeks for joint pain, without medical advice.
  • Store the tea in a dry, cool place in a well-closed pack.

Who is it for?

Nettle leaf tea is intended for adults and adolescents. The EMA does not recommend use in children under 12 years, because there is not enough safety data.

It suits people who want to include a herbal tea with a traditional use for the urinary tract in their daily fluid intake.

Important notes

  • Do not use in conditions where a doctor has advised reduced fluid intake, such as severe heart or kidney disease.
  • If fever, painful urination, cramps or blood in the urine occur during use, see a doctor immediately.
  • Joint pain accompanied by swelling, redness or fever needs a doctor's assessment.
  • Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended, as safety has not been established.
  • Mild stomach complaints (nausea, diarrhoea) or skin reactions (itching, rash) may occur.

Pharmacist's advice:

It is best to drink nettle tea during the day rather than before bed – since it increases urination, an evening cup may wake you at night. If you take medicines for blood pressure, the heart or diuretics, ask your pharmacist before drinking the tea regularly.

Minor urinary complaints that do not settle within a few days, or get worse, are not for self-treatment with tea – an examination and a urine test are needed.
