Neo-Penotran Forte is a vaginal suppository containing metronidazole (750 mg), miconazole nitrate (200 mg) and lidocaine (100 mg). It is used to treat vaginal infections caused by various pathogens. Metronidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial drug that acts against infections caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria. Miconazole is an antifungal medicine that works against fungi, especially Candida albicans. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that relieves pain and irritation.
Neo-Penotran Forte is administered intravaginally, usually 1 suppository at bedtime for 7 days. In case of recurrence or when the infection did not respond to the previous treatment, the therapy can be extended to 14 days. The suppository should be inserted deep into the vagina using the included application fingers. After the introduction, it is recommended that the patient remains in a supine position for at least another 30 minutes.
Possible side effects include local irritation, burning, vaginal itching, stomach pain, headache and allergic reactions such as skin rash. Rare side effects may include leukopenia, movement disorders, taste disturbances, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, metallic taste, fatigue, and mood changes. These side effects occur very rarely, because metronidazole is absorbed in very small amounts when administered vaginally.
Neo-Penotran Forte is contraindicated in the following cases: hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the drug, first trimester of pregnancy, porphyria, epilepsy, severe liver function disorders and children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
The use of Neo-Penotran Forte during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be carefully considered. Metronidazole and lidocaine are classified as category B drugs, while miconazole is classified as category C. It is recommended that the drug be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit exceeds the potential risk to the fetus. During breastfeeding, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding during treatment, as metronidazole passes into breast milk.
The medicine should be stored at a temperature of up to 25°C, protected from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children.
