Lipanor capsules contain ciprofibrate, a medicine from the fibrate group used to lower blood fats (lipids), especially triglycerides.
The medicine is taken in addition to a low-fat diet, physical activity and weight reduction. Each hard capsule contains 100 mg of ciprofibrate, and the pack contains 30 capsules.
Important warning
- The medicine is prescription-only and must be taken exactly as instructed by your doctor.
- Report any muscle pain, tenderness or weakness to your doctor immediately – it may be a sign of serious muscle damage.
- It must not be taken if you have liver or kidney disease, with other fibrates or with rosuvastatin 40 mg.
- It is not recommended during pregnancy; if you become pregnant, stop the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.

What is Lipanor used for?
Lipanor is used in addition to diet and other non-drug measures (physical activity, weight reduction) for:
- treatment of severe hypertriglyceridaemia (very high triglycerides), with or without low HDL cholesterol;
- treatment of mixed hyperlipidaemia when statins are contraindicated or not tolerated.
How is Lipanor taken and dosed?
- The recommended dose is 1 capsule daily. This dose must not be exceeded.
- Swallow the capsule with a large glass of water.
- Treatment is long-term and must be taken regularly for as long as your doctor prescribes, while continuing to follow the dietary advice.
- Your doctor regularly monitors the effectiveness of treatment with blood lipid tests.
Special patient groups
- Children and adolescents: not intended for use, except in severe treatment-responsive lipid disorders under special medical supervision.
- Older people: tell your doctor if you are over 70 (higher risk of muscle side effects).
- Liver or kidney disease: contraindication – the medicine must not be taken.
- Untreated underactive thyroid: tell your doctor before starting treatment.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
- allergy to ciprofibrate or any of the excipients;
- liver or kidney disease;
- concomitant use of other fibrates or rosuvastatin 40 mg.
Warnings and precautions
- follow the dietary advice throughout treatment;
- report muscle pain, tenderness or weakness to your doctor immediately – very rarely it may be a sign of a life-threatening condition (rhabdomyolysis);
- tell your doctor if you drink large amounts of alcohol, have kidney disease, are over 70, have uncontrolled hypothyroidism, have previously had muscle side effects with another fibrate, or if you or family members have a hereditary muscle disorder;
- your doctor may order liver function tests before starting and periodically during the first year, as well as regular blood lipid tests;
- the medicine contains lactose – tell your doctor if you are intolerant to some sugars.
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
- Other lipid-lowering medicines (fibrates or statins) – increased risk of muscle side effects; Lipanor must not be taken with another fibrate or rosuvastatin 40 mg.
- Anticoagulants (blood-thinning medicines) – your doctor may need to adjust the anticoagulant dose.
- Colchicine (a medicine for gout attacks).
- The leaflet does not mention any effect of food or drink.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Pregnancy: use of the medicine is not recommended. If you find out you are pregnant during treatment, stop the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.
Breast-feeding: because there are no data on excretion into breast milk, breast-feeding is not recommended if treatment is necessary after childbirth.
Driving and using machines
Rarely, the medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness and tiredness. If you experience these symptoms, do not drive or use machines.
Possible side effects
Common (up to 1 in 10): muscle pain; abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea; hair loss; headache, dizziness.
Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): indigestion, vomiting; rash (spots); dizziness, drowsiness.
Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): tiredness.
Not known: muscle tenderness and weakness (myopathy), breakdown of muscle tissue (rhabdomyolysis); raised liver enzymes, gallstones, acute liver damage and/or jaundice; itching, hives, eczema, skin reaction to sunlight or UV radiation; erectile dysfunction; serious breathing problems (difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, fever, dry cough); reduced platelet count.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: if you have taken more than you should, talk to your doctor immediately.
- Missed dose: do not take a double dose; continue treatment as planned.
- Stopping treatment: treatment is long-term – do not stop it without talking to your doctor.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with tiredness or fever;
- yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine or severe pain under the right ribs;
- difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, fever and dry cough;
- unexplained bleeding or bruising;
- marked rash or hives with facial swelling or difficulty breathing.
Pharmacist's advice
Take Lipanor every day with a large glass of water and do not exceed one capsule a day. The medicine only works together with a low-fat diet, physical activity and limited alcohol – these measures are an integral part of treatment.
Report any unexplained muscle pain or weakness to your doctor straight away. Do not start “cholesterol” products with red yeast rice (monacolin, which acts like a statin) without your doctor’s agreement. Protect your skin from strong sun and UV radiation.

Frequently asked questions
How many Lipanor capsules are taken per day?
According to the leaflet, the recommended dose is one capsule a day and must not be exceeded. Swallow the capsule with a large glass of water.
Can I take Lipanor together with a statin?
Only if your doctor decides so. Combining a fibrate with a statin increases the risk of muscle damage, and Lipanor must not be taken with another fibrate or with rosuvastatin 40 mg.
