How do you prepare hawthorn flower with leaf tea from the “Dr Josif Pančić” Institute, and what should you watch out for?

Hawthorn flower with leaf from the Institute for Medicinal Plant Research “Dr Josif Pančić” is a single-herb tea made from the dried flowering tops of hawthorn with leaves (Crataegi summitates). The Latin name of the plant is Crataegus monogyna L. The pack contains 80 g of cut herb.

Hawthorn leaf and flower are among the best-known plants of European traditional herbal medicine. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA/HMPC), they are traditionally used to relieve mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep, and for temporary complaints such as palpitations related to nervousness – but only after serious conditions have been ruled out by a doctor.

This tea is not a medicine and does not replace treatment of heart disease or high blood pressure. Because hawthorn can affect the action of some heart medicines, the warnings below are particularly important. Hawthorn is also an ingredient of the manufacturer's tea blends No. 22 and 54.

Key benefits:

  • Single-herb tea – dried flowering tops of hawthorn with leaves (Crataegi summitates).
  • According to the manufacturer, contains oligomeric procyanidins (up to 3%) and flavonoids (up to 2%).
  • Traditional use for mild symptoms of stress and as a sleep aid (EMA/HMPC).
  • Simple preparation – one teaspoon per cup of boiling water.
  • Product of the “Dr Josif Pančić” Institute, 80 g pack.

Who is it for?

The tea is intended for adults. According to the EMA, use for temporary palpitations related to nervousness applies to adults only, and use for mild symptoms of stress and to aid sleep applies to adults and adolescents over 12 years. The manufacturer does not recommend use during pregnancy and breastfeeding and advises against self-treatment.

Important notes

  • Do not use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (manufacturer).
  • Do not use together with beta-blockers (manufacturer). If you take any medicines for the heart, heart rhythm or blood pressure, drink the tea only with your doctor's approval.
  • Palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath or swollen legs need to be examined by a doctor – do not treat yourself.
  • If symptoms last longer than two weeks or get worse during use, see a doctor (EMA).
  • Do not use if you are hypersensitive to hawthorn.

Pharmacist's advice:

Many people see hawthorn as a “gentle tea for the heart”, which is exactly why it should not be used on your own if you are being treated for heart disease. The manufacturer explicitly states that the tea should not be taken with beta-blockers; if you take other medicines for the heart, rhythm or blood pressure, talk to your doctor before your first cup.

If you drink the tea to unwind in the evening, have the last cup one or two hours before bedtime. If there is no improvement after two weeks of regular use, do not increase the amount – see a doctor.
