GlucaGen Hypokit contains glucagon, a natural hormone that has the opposite effect to insulin in the body. Glucagon helps the liver convert stored glycogen into glucose and release it into the blood, so the blood sugar level rises quickly.

The medicine is intended for emergency use in children and adults with diabetes treated with insulin who lose consciousness or cannot eat sugar because of very low blood sugar (severe hypoglycaemia). The pack contains a vial with 1 mg glucagon as a powder and a pre-filled syringe with water for injections, so the medicine must be prepared before it is given. Healthcare professionals also use it to relax the stomach and bowel during radiological and endoscopic examinations.

Important warning

  • Legal status: the medicine is available on medical prescription.
  • The pre-filled syringe contains only water – before the injection the water must be mixed with the powder in the vial. The prepared solution is used immediately.
  • Family members, colleagues and friends should know in advance where the medicine is kept and how it is given, because they must act quickly when someone is unconscious.
  • After every use, contact a doctor – the reason for the severe hypoglycaemia must be found.
  • The medicine must not be used in patients with a tumour of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma).
  • This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

When is GlucaGen Hypokit used and how is the injection given correctly?

What is GlucaGen Hypokit used for?

According to the Summary of Product Characteristics, GlucaGen Hypokit has two uses:

  • therapeutic – treatment of severe hypoglycaemic reactions in children and adults with diabetes treated with insulin;
  • diagnostic – temporary reduction of stomach and bowel movement during examinations of the digestive tract in adults; this use is carried out only by medical staff.

How is the injection prepared and given?

The package leaflet describes the following steps:

  • Remove the plastic cap from the vial and the cover from the needle. Push the needle through the rubber stopper of the vial and inject all the liquid from the syringe into the vial.
  • Without removing the needle, gently shake the vial until the powder has dissolved completely and the solution is clear.
  • Draw all the solution back into the syringe and expel any air bubbles.
  • Inject the dose under the skin or into a muscle.
  • Turn the unconscious person onto their side to prevent choking.
  • As soon as the person wakes up and is able to eat, give them something rich in sugar (sweets, biscuits or fruit juice) – this prevents blood sugar from falling again.
PersonDose (severe hypoglycaemia)
Adultsthe whole volume – 1 mL (mark “1” on the syringe), i.e. 1 mg
Children weighing more than 25 kgthe whole volume – 1 mL (1 mg)
Children weighing less than 25 kghalf the volume – 0.5 mL (mark “0.5” on the syringe), i.e. 0.5 mg

The patient should respond within 10 minutes. If there is no response, intravenous glucose in a healthcare facility is needed – call emergency services. The medicine must not be given as an intravenous infusion. Any unused prepared solution must be discarded.

Special patient groups

  • Children and adolescents: the medicine can be used to treat severe hypoglycaemia; the dose depends on body weight (0.5 mg below 25 kg, 1 mg above 25 kg). Safety of diagnostic use in children has not been established.
  • Elderly: the medicine can be used; caution is needed in diagnostic procedures in elderly people with heart disease.
  • Kidney or liver impairment: the medicine can be used.

Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used

  • allergy to glucagon or any of the excipients;
  • tumour of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma) – glucagon can cause a sudden rise in blood pressure.

Warnings and precautions

GlucaGen Hypokit will not work properly when the glycogen stores in the liver are depleted, i.e.:

  • after prolonged fasting;
  • with low adrenaline levels (adrenal insufficiency);
  • in chronic hypoglycaemia;
  • in low blood sugar caused by drinking too much alcohol;
  • with a tumour releasing insulin (insulinoma) or glucagon (glucagonoma).

In these situations, or if the person does not wake up within 10 minutes, urgent medical help is needed. The medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per maximum dose, i.e. it is essentially “sodium-free”.

Interactions with other medicines, food and drink

  • insulin – has the opposite effect to glucagon;
  • indometacin (a medicine for pain and joint stiffness) – glucagon may lose its ability to raise blood sugar or may even paradoxically cause hypoglycaemia;
  • warfarin – glucagon may increase its blood-thinning effect;
  • beta-blockers – a short-lasting rise in blood pressure and pulse is possible.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If very low blood sugar occurs, GlucaGen Hypokit can be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Glucagon does not cross the placenta, and the amount passing into breast milk is negligible and has no effect on the baby. If you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning a pregnancy, discuss a hypoglycaemia action plan with your doctor.

Driving and using machines

After severe hypoglycaemia, the ability to concentrate and react may be impaired. Do not drive or use machines until the symptoms have passed and your condition is stable.

Possible side effects

Contact a doctor immediately if you notice signs of an allergic reaction (very rare, up to 1 in 10,000 patients): wheezing, sweating, fast heartbeat, rash, swelling of the face or collapse.

  • common (up to 1 in 10): nausea;
  • uncommon (up to 1 in 100): vomiting;
  • rare (up to 1 in 1,000): abdominal pain.

With diagnostic use, changes in blood pressure, fast heartbeat and hypoglycaemia have also been reported, especially in people who had been fasting.

Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment

  • Overdose: too high a dose may cause nausea and vomiting; specific treatment is usually not needed.
  • If there is no response: do not repeat the injection on your own – if the person does not wake up within 10 minutes, call emergency services.
  • After use: the patient must eat carbohydrates and contact a doctor.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • the person does not wake up within 10 minutes after the injection;
  • difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face or collapse after the injection;
  • blood sugar falls again after recovery;
  • every episode of severe hypoglycaemia – even after recovery, the person should see a doctor.

Pharmacist's advice

Keep GlucaGen Hypokit in a known, easily accessible place and show your household how it is prepared – the pre-filled syringe contains only water, and the medicine is the powder in the vial. Check the expiry date and that the plastic cap of the vial has not been removed.

If you store the medicine outside the fridge (below 25 °C), note the date – it may be kept like this for up to 18 months within the expiry date. Regular blood sugar checks with a glucose meter help to recognise hypoglycaemia in time, but do not replace the treatment plan agreed with your doctor.
