Famotidin Alkaloid is a film-coated tablet containing famotidine – a substance from the group of H2-receptor antagonists. Famotidine reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach, so it is used for gastric and duodenal ulcers and for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

The medicine is made by Alkaloid and is authorised in Serbia in two strengths – 20 mg and 40 mg famotidine per tablet. It is dispensed on prescription, and the doctor determines the dose and duration of treatment according to the disease and kidney function.

Important warning

  • Supply status: prescription-only medicine.
  • The medicine must not be used while breast-feeding or in case of allergy to famotidine or other H2 blockers.
  • Before starting treatment the doctor should rule out a malignant stomach tumour, as famotidine can mask its symptoms.
  • The dose is reduced in impaired kidney function; the medicine is not prescribed for children.
  • Do not stop treatment without talking to your doctor. Always follow the official package leaflet. This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

Pharmacist's advice

Famotidin Alkaloid is usually taken in the evening at bedtime (for GORD in the morning and evening) – linking the dose to the same daily routine helps you not to miss it. Take the treatment for as long as your doctor has set, even if symptoms go away quickly.

If you occasionally take antacids or sucralfate alongside famotidine, ask your pharmacist about spacing the medicines. See your doctor if symptoms do not settle, or if you notice difficulty swallowing, weight loss, black stools or vomiting blood.
