What is ellaOne used for in the EU?

According to the EMA SmPC, ellaOne is intended for:

  • emergency contraception within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure

The medicine is intended for women of child-bearing age, including adolescents. Emergency contraception is for occasional use and should in no instance replace regular contraception.

How is it taken?

According to the official documentation, one tablet is taken as soon as possible and no later than 120 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking it, another tablet should be taken. After taking it, reliable barrier protection is advised until the next menstrual period.

This information describes the official EU product information and is not an individual recommendation – for emergency contraception in Serbia, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Important safety information from the official documentation

  • The only contraindication is hypersensitivity to ulipristal acetate or the excipients. Use is not recommended in severe hepatic impairment or in women with severe asthma treated with oral glucocorticoids.
  • Reduced efficacy with increasing body weight or body mass index is possible, but the data are limited and inconclusive – the tablet should be taken as soon as possible regardless of body weight.
  • Concomitant use with CYP3A4 inducers (e.g. rifampicin, carbamazepine, St John’s wort) is not recommended, nor if such medicines were used in the previous 4 weeks; concomitant use with emergency contraception containing levonorgestrel is also not recommended.
  • The most common side effects are headache, nausea, abdominal pain and painful periods; dizziness is also common, and drowsiness and blurred vision are uncommon, which should be kept in mind when driving.
  • Breast-feeding is not recommended for one week after taking the medicine; milk should be expressed and discarded during this period.

What is available in Serbia?

No medicine containing ulipristal acetate for emergency contraception is currently authorised in Serbia. A medicine with a different active substance is authorised for emergency contraception and is available without a prescription (ALIMS list 08/2026):

OptionWhat it isNote
Escapelle®, 1.5 mg, tablets (levonorgestrel, Gedeon Richter; authorisation renewed 07.10.2024; an orodispersible tablet also exists)emergency contraception, without a prescriptiona different medicine: taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse; if vomiting occurs within 3 hours, another tablet is taken immediately
Gynaecologist appointmentchoice of regular contraception and assessment after emergency contraceptionafter 72 hours from intercourse, always see a doctor

According to the SmPC for Escapelle, women who have used enzyme-inducing medicines in the previous 4 weeks are advised to use non-hormonal emergency contraception (copper intrauterine device) or, if this is not possible, a double dose of levonorgestrel – this is decided by a doctor or pharmacist.

A replacement medicine must always be chosen by a doctor. A pharmacist can help you choose suitable supportive products and care, but cannot replace the treatment prescribed by your doctor.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • severe lower abdominal pain, especially on one side, after emergency contraception (ectopic pregnancy must be ruled out)
  • a period more than 7 days late or unusually light bleeding
  • heavy or prolonged vaginal bleeding
  • swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, hives
  • fainting or severe dizziness

Pharmacist’s advice

Emergency contraception works best the sooner it is taken. In Serbia, Escapelle can be obtained in a pharmacy without a prescription – do not wait, and tell the pharmacist how much time has passed since intercourse and which medicines or herbal products (e.g. St John’s wort) you use.

After emergency contraception, use condoms until your next period. If your period is more than 7 days late or unusual, take a pregnancy test. Emergency contraception is not a method for regular use – agree on reliable regular contraception with a gynaecologist.
