Mosquito Protection for the Home – Plug-in Devices, Mats, Liquids and UV Lamps
Mosquito protection for your home includes plug-in devices with mats or liquid, their refills, UV and LED lamps, coils for outdoor use and sprays against flying insects. This category, part of Insects – mosquito protection and repellents, offers Aroxol, Raid, Xibiz Home, Chicco Zanza and Mosquito products – from device-and-mat kits to refills for 30, 45 and 60 nights.
These products protect a room or part of a terrace, not a person going outdoors. For walks, trips or time near water you also need a body repellent – a spray, lotion or roll-on from the body insect repellents category.

How to use plug-in mosquito devices safely
- Switch the device on 20–30 minutes before bedtime, with a window or door partly open
- Plug it in away from the head of the bed and the baby's cot
- Use refills of the same brand as the device – mats and bottles are not interchangeable
- Do not touch the mat or bottle while the device is on; wash your hands after use
- Keep refills closed and out of reach of children and pets
- After using a spray, leave the room and air it before spending time there again
How to have fewer mosquitoes at home
- Fit screens on windows and balcony doors
- Empty containers with standing water – plant saucers, buckets, rain barrels
- In the evening, switch lights on only after closing unscreened windows
- Use a net over the cot in a baby's bedroom
Pharmacist's adviceFor bedrooms, liquid plug-in devices are the most common choice because the refill does not need changing every evening. If a baby, a pregnant woman or someone with asthma sleeps in the room, read the instructions before buying, check who the device is intended for and air the room regularly. Never use coils or insect sprays in an enclosed room where people sleep. If you still get bitten, soothe the skin with after-bite products, and apply a repellent to your skin when spending time outdoors. |
Tips and useful guides
Frequently asked questions
What is the best plug-in mosquito device?
For bedrooms and everyday use, liquid devices are more practical (e.g. Aroxol Liquid 60, Raid device + liquid, Xibiz Home Duo); for occasional use, mat devices. For children there are devices such as Chicco Zanza, and for terraces UV lamps and coils.
How long does one mat or bottle last?
One mat is intended for one night. A liquid bottle lasts as many nights as stated on the pack – for example 45 or 60 nights when the device is used about 8 hours a day.
Does a UV mosquito lamp work indoors?
Yes, but it is best placed in a darker part of the room, away from where people sit or sleep, because the light draws insects towards the lamp. Clean the tray or grid regularly according to the instructions.
Can mosquito coils be used in a flat?
No. Coils produce smoke and are intended only for outdoor use – a terrace, garden or campsite.
