Cardiopirin 100 mg is a gastro-resistant tablet containing acetylsalicylic acid. At this low dose, it inhibits platelet aggregation and reduces the formation of certain blood clots.
It is used for secondary prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular thrombotic events in patients who have already had a heart attack or ischaemic stroke and following coronary bypass surgery.
Cardiopirin must not be started independently as a general “blood-thinning” treatment. A doctor should be consulted before it is used for the first time to prevent cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events.
The medicine increases bleeding tendency. Black stools, vomiting blood, blood in the urine, unexplained bruising or prolonged bleeding require medical assessment.
Cardiopirin 100 mg – uses, dosage and precautions
What is Cardiopirin used for?
- prevention of another heart attack in a patient who has already had one;
- prevention of another ischaemic stroke;
- prevention of thrombotic events after a heart attack or stroke;
- prevention of blood clots following coronary bypass surgery.
It should not be started independently for primary prevention in an otherwise healthy person. A doctor must assess cardiovascular benefit against the risk of serious bleeding.
How is Cardiopirin taken?
The usual long-term adult dose is 100 mg once daily. Swallow the gastro-resistant tablet whole with plenty of liquid, preferably with a meal.
Do not break, crush or chew it during regular long-term treatment. Chewing is mentioned in the official leaflet only for a special situation at the time of diagnosis to obtain faster absorption and must not be used independently as first aid.
Do not take a double dose after a missed dose and do not stop regular treatment without speaking to the doctor.
When must Cardiopirin not be used?
- allergy to acetylsalicylic acid, salicylates or an excipient;
- a previous asthma attack or hypersensitivity reaction caused by aspirin or another NSAID;
- an active stomach or duodenal ulcer;
- a bleeding disorder;
- severe kidney or liver impairment;
- severe heart failure;
- methotrexate at a dose of 15 mg weekly or more;
- the final trimester of pregnancy;
- children under 16 years, except for selected specialist indications.
Conditions requiring caution
Tell the doctor about a previous ulcer or digestive bleeding, asthma, nasal polyps, kidney or liver disease, heart failure, G6PD deficiency, gout, uncontrolled high blood pressure or another antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine.
Inform the doctor, dentist or surgeon before any operation or dental extraction. Do not stop Cardiopirin before a procedure without medical instructions.
Interactions
Relevant medicines include:
- warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel and other medicines affecting blood clotting;
- ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and other NSAIDs;
- metamizole, which may reduce the antiplatelet action of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid;
- methotrexate, corticosteroids and valproic acid;
- digoxin, diuretics and ACE inhibitors;
- diabetes medicines;
- probenecid and other medicines used for gout.
Ibuprofen and naproxen may interfere with the antiplatelet effect. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before choosing a medicine for pain or fever.
Avoid alcohol because it increases damage to the gastrointestinal lining and the risk of bleeding.
Do not automatically add high-dose omega-3, garlic, ginkgo, nattokinase, serrapeptase, curcumin or another supplement that may affect platelets or bleeding.
A dietary supplement does not replace Cardiopirin and cannot be used to treat or dissolve a blood clot.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
During the first and second trimesters, use is permitted only when prescribed by a doctor and for the shortest necessary duration. Cardiopirin is contraindicated during the final trimester.
Acetylsalicylic acid passes into breast milk in small amounts. Regular, prolonged or higher-dose treatment may require breastfeeding to be discontinued.
Possible side effects
- heartburn, indigestion and stomach pain;
- stomach or duodenal ulcer;
- hidden or visible gastrointestinal bleeding;
- bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums or prolonged bleeding from wounds;
- anaemia caused by long-term blood loss;
- rash, itching, hives or an asthma reaction;
- kidney or liver impairment.
Dizziness, impaired hearing and ringing in the ears may indicate an excessive dose.
- black, tarry stools or visible blood in the stool;
- vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds;
- sudden severe headache, one-sided weakness or impaired speech;
- blood in the urine or another unexplained bleed;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;

Important: these products are not substitutes for antiplatelet treatment and do not prevent or dissolve an existing blood clot.
Does Cardiopirin “thin” the blood?
It does not change blood density. It inhibits platelet aggregation and reduces the formation of certain clots.
Is it used to prevent a first heart attack?
It must not be started independently for that purpose. This product is primarily authorised for secondary prevention and use after bypass surgery.
Can the tablet be chewed?
During regular treatment it is swallowed whole. Chewing applies only to a specific medically directed diagnostic situation.
Can ibuprofen be used?
Ibuprofen may interfere with the antiplatelet effect and increase adverse-event risk. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
Should it be stopped before dental extraction?
Do not stop it independently. The doctor and dentist must assess both bleeding and thrombosis risk.
