Bromocriptine (registered in Serbia as Bromokriptin Zdravlje, 2.5 mg, tablet) belongs to the group of dopamine agonists and prolactin secretion inhibitors. It stimulates dopamine receptors in the brain and reduces the release of the hormones prolactin and growth hormone.
It is therefore used both in endocrinology (stopping milk production for medical reasons, conditions caused by excess prolactin, prolactinomas, acromegaly) and in neurology (Parkinson's disease). It is a prescription-only medicine and the dose is always set individually.
Important warning
- This medicine is available on prescription only.
- It must not be taken in high blood pressure, high blood pressure in pregnancy or after childbirth (eclampsia, pre-eclampsia), heart and blood vessel disease, fibrotic changes of the heart, severe psychiatric disorders or while breast-feeding.
- After childbirth, high blood pressure, heart attack, convulsions and stroke have very rarely been reported – the doctor checks blood pressure at the start of treatment.
- Sudden sleep episodes, dizziness and impulse control disorders (gambling, binge eating, excessive spending, increased sex drive) may occur.

- prolactinomas – benign pituitary tumours that secrete prolactin
- acromegaly – a disease with excessive secretion of growth hormone

How is it taken and dosed?
The medicine is always taken with a meal. For most indications treatment is started gradually: usually half a tablet (1.25 mg) at bedtime, then 2.5 mg at bedtime after 2–3 days, increasing further by half to one tablet every 2–3 days up to 2.5 mg twice a day.
| Indication | General dosage from the SmPC |
|---|---|
| Prevention of lactation | 2.5 mg on the day of delivery, then 2.5 mg twice daily for 14 days; no gradual introduction |
| Suppression of lactation for medical reasons | 2.5 mg on the first day, after 2–3 days 2.5 mg twice daily for 14 days |
| Hyperprolactinaemia, galactorrhoea, infertility | gradual introduction; most patients respond to 7.5 mg daily in divided doses (up to 30 mg daily) |
| Prolactinomas and acromegaly | gradual increase by 2.5 mg daily every 2–3 days (2.5 mg every 8 h, then every 6 h, then 5 mg every 6 h); for prolactinomas no more than 30 mg daily |
| Parkinson's disease | week 1: 1.25 mg in the evening; week 2: 2.5 mg in the evening; week 3: 2.5 mg twice, week 4: three times daily; then by 2.5 mg every 3–14 days, usually 10–30 mg daily (maximum 30 mg) |

This is the general dosage from the Summary of Product Characteristics – your doctor sets your exact schedule.

Warnings and precautions
- Immediately after childbirth, high blood pressure, heart attack, convulsions, stroke or mental problems occur very rarely – blood pressure is checked during the first days of treatment.

When to seek medical help immediately?

Pharmacist's advice
Always take bromocriptine with a meal – this reduces nausea and dizziness, which are most common at the start of treatment. Follow exactly the gradual dose-increase schedule written by your doctor; a daily pill organiser makes it easier to keep track of several doses a day and half tablets.
During the first days of treatment, and especially after childbirth, measure your blood pressure regularly and get out of bed slowly. Do not drink alcohol during treatment. If you take the medicine for prolactin problems or infertility, remember that fertility may return quickly.
