How to take your baby's temperature

• For babies under 6 months, paediatricians usually advise using a digital thermometer under the arm – place the tip in the middle of the armpit and hold your baby's arm against the body
• Hold a non-contact thermometer at the distance stated by the manufacturer, over a dry forehead free of hair and sweat
• Do not take the temperature right after bathing, feeding or when your baby is overdressed – wait 15 to 20 minutes
• Different methods give slightly different readings; to follow an illness, always use the same thermometer and method
• Write down the time and reading – it is useful information for your paediatrician

Nail and hair care

Babies' nails grow quickly and are sharp, so babies can scratch their faces. To trim them, use scissors with rounded tips (e.g. Canpol Babies scissors with cap), a baby nail clipper or a nail care set that also includes a file.

• Nails are easiest to trim while your baby sleeps or after a bath, when they are softer
• Gently pull the fingertip away from the nail; trim fingernails slightly rounded and toenails straight across
• Smooth sharp edges with a nail file

• A soft brush also helps with cradle cap, to gently remove flakes after washing the hair
