Azalia was an oral contraceptive containing only one hormone, the progestogen desogestrel, 75 micrograms per film-coated tablet. Such tablets are often called "mini-pills" because they contain no oestrogen. The manufacturer was Gedeon Richter, and the medicine was available on prescription.
According to the last summary of product characteristics approved in Serbia, the only indication for Azalia was contraception. All information on this page comes from the official documents listed in the sources.

What was Azalia used for?
According to the summary of product characteristics, Azalia was intended for contraception (prevention of pregnancy). The leaflet stated that a drawback of this type of tablet may be vaginal bleeding at irregular intervals, and it is also possible to have no bleeding at all.
How to take the tablets and what to do after a missed tablet were described in the official leaflet; this page does not give recommendations for using a medicine that is no longer on the market.
Who was not allowed to use Azalia?
- women hypersensitive to desogestrel or any of the excipients
- women with an active venous thromboembolic disorder
- women with current or previous severe liver disease, until liver function values return to normal
- women with known or suspected sex-hormone-sensitive malignancies
- women with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
The tablets contained lactose (about 52 mg per tablet).
What is available in Serbia?
According to the ALIMS lists reviewed up to 2026, there is no registered tablet in Serbia that contains desogestrel alone. Combined pills (oestrogen + progestogen) and other contraceptive methods are not a 1:1 replacement – they have different contraindications and the choice depends on your health, so the method is chosen by a gynaecologist.
| Option | What it is | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Examination by a gynaecologist | choice of a new contraceptive method | especially if you chose Azalia because you must not use oestrogen |
| Condoms | barrier method | protection until a new method is started; also protect against sexually transmitted infections |
| Pregnancy test | check in case of a missed period | if pregnancy is suspected after stopping contraception |
When to seek medical help immediately?
- pain, swelling or redness in one leg
- sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing
- severe pain in the lower abdomen (possible ectopic pregnancy)
- unusually heavy vaginal bleeding
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
Pharmacist's advice
If you still have Azalia tablets left, check the expiry date and book a gynaecologist appointment in good time so that you are not left without protection.
If you have stopped taking the tablets, use a condom until a new method starts, and take a pregnancy test if your period does not come.
