How do you use Supitox spray to get rid of head lice?

Supitox is an insecticidal spray made by Veterinarski zavod Subotica in Serbia, intended for treating head lice (Pediculus capitis) on the hairy parts of the head. It is not a medicine or a food supplement, but a biocidal insecticide product.

The spray contains two active substances: tetramethrin 0.3%, a pyrethroid insecticide, and piperonyl butoxide 1.5%, a synergist that enhances the effect of the pyrethroid. According to the manufacturer, it also acts against flying and crawling insects, so it can be sprayed in enclosed spaces or directly onto insects.

The 200 ml bottle is enough for about 10 treatments for boys and men with normal hair length, or about 5 treatments for girls and women with longer hair. Treatment takes 30 minutes and should be repeated after 8–10 days.

How to use

Instructions for head lice according to the manufacturer:

Spray the hair until it is completely damp.
Cover the hair with a scarf and leave for 30 minutes.
Comb the hair carefully and thoroughly (ideally with a fine-toothed lice comb), then wash it with ordinary shampoo and rinse well.
Repeat the treatment after 8–10 days to deal with lice that hatch from eggs (nits) in the meantime.
For other insects: spray in enclosed spaces or directly onto the insects.

Who is it for?

Supitox is intended for treating head lice in people whose hair is infested, and for treating family members who are found to have lice at the same time. It is also used against flying and crawling insects indoors.

Important notes

Use only as directed on the label; read the instructions on the pack before use.
Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes; protect the face while spraying. If it gets into the eyes, rinse with plenty of water.
Do not use on broken or inflamed scalp.
For small children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and in people with asthma or allergies, ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Keep out of the reach of children.

Pharmacist's advice:

The most common reason lice 'come back' is skipping the second treatment – mark the date for day 8–10 in your calendar right away. Check all household members on the same day and treat only those who actually have lice or nits. Combing with a fine metal lice comb is just as important as the spray, because it removes dead lice and loosened nits. Wash pillowcases, hats and scarves at 60 °C, and put items that cannot be washed in a closed bag for two weeks.

1. How long should Supitox stay on the hair?

According to the manufacturer, 30 minutes under a scarf. After that, comb the hair thoroughly and wash it with ordinary shampoo.

2. Why does the treatment need to be repeated?

Lice eggs (nits) may survive the first treatment. Repeating it after 8–10 days targets lice that have hatched in the meantime, before they can lay new eggs.

3. How many treatments are in one bottle?

About 10 treatments for boys and men with normal hair length, or about 5 for girls and women with longer hair.

4. Can Supitox be used on small children?

The label does not state an age limit. For small children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.
