Important: The information on this page does not replace advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Use this medicine according to the official package leaflet or the advice of a healthcare professional. What are Prospan lozenges used for?
Prospan lozenges are used as an expectorant for a productive cough, meaning a cough accompanied by mucus or phlegm.
Dry ivy leaf extract helps loosen thick mucus in the airways and makes it easier to cough up.
Prospan is not automatically suitable for every type of cough. A dry, irritating cough without mucus may require a different approach. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are unsure about the type of cough.
Seek medical advice: Contact a doctor or pharmacist if difficulty breathing, fever, purulent or bloody sputum, chest pain or a worsening general condition develops. Do not rely only on symptomatic treatment when warning signs are present.
How are Prospan lozenges taken?
Always take this medicine exactly as stated in the official package leaflet or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over:
- one lozenge in the morning;
- two lozenges at midday;
- one lozenge in the evening;
- a total of four lozenges daily, corresponding to 104 mg of dry ivy leaf extract.
For the midday dose, slowly dissolve one lozenge completely in the mouth before taking the second lozenge. Do not take two lozenges at the same time.
Children aged 6 to 11 years:
- one lozenge twice daily;
- a total of two lozenges daily, corresponding to 52 mg of dry ivy leaf extract.
Allow the lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth after a meal. Do not take the lozenge while lying down.
Duration of use: Consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms last longer than seven days while using this medicine. Do not increase the dose or extend treatment on your own.
Use in children
Prospan lozenges are intended for children aged six years and over.
This pharmaceutical form is not intended for children under six years of age. Other formulations, such as syrup or oral drops, may be more suitable for children aged two to five years after advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
Secretolytic cough medicines must not be given to children under two years of age because of the risk of worsening respiratory symptoms.
A persistent or recurrent cough in a child aged two to four years requires medical assessment and diagnosis before treatment is started.
When must Prospan not be taken?
Do not take this medicine:
- if you are allergic to ivy leaf;
- if you are allergic to other plants in the Araliaceae family;
- if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients;
- in children under two years of age;
- if you have hereditary fructose intolerance.
Because of the pharmaceutical form, Prospan lozenges are not intended for children under six years of age.
Warnings and precautions
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Prospan if you have gastritis or a stomach ulcer.
Contact a healthcare professional if any of the following occur:
- difficulty breathing or rapid breathing;
- fever;
- purulent or bloody sputum;
- a worsening cough;
- a cough lasting longer than seven days;
- signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Taking Prospan together with cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan is not recommended without prior medical advice.
Important information about some ingredients
Each Prospan lozenge contains:
- 0.53 g of maltitol;
- 0.53 g of sorbitol;
- approximately 2.6 kcal or 10.6 kJ;
- sulphur dioxide – sulphite E220;
- less than 100 mg of ethanol from the orange flavour per dose;
- less than 1 mmol or 23 mg of sodium per dose and is therefore essentially sodium-free.
Sorbitol is a source of fructose and may affect the availability of other oral medicines taken at the same time.
Sulphur dioxide may rarely cause severe hypersensitivity reactions and bronchospasm.
Speak to a doctor before use if you or your child have been told that you cannot tolerate certain sugars.
Interactions with other medicines
Interaction studies have not been performed and no specific interactions with other medicines are currently known.
Nevertheless, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Do not combine Prospan with cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan without medical advice. Suppressing the cough reflex may make it harder to clear loosened mucus.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Use of Prospan lozenges during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended because there are insufficient safety data on ivy leaf extract in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
No information is available regarding the effect of the medicine on fertility.
Driving and using machines
No studies have been conducted on the effects of Prospan on the ability to drive or use machines.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Prospan may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects of unknown frequency include:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhoea;
- hives;
- skin rash;
- difficulty breathing;
- anaphylactic reactions.
Seek emergency medical help: Stop taking the medicine and get immediate help if swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, widespread hives or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.
Tell a doctor or pharmacist about any suspected side effect.
What if too much Prospan is taken?
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Taking more than the recommended amount may cause:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhoea;
- restlessness or agitation.
Contact a doctor if you or a child have taken more lozenges than recommended.
What if a dose is forgotten?
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Continue according to the usual schedule or the instructions given by your doctor.
How should Prospan lozenges be stored?
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store at a temperature of up to 25 °C.
- Keep the lozenges in their original blister until use.
- Do not use after the expiry date stated on the package.
Do not dispose of unused medicines through wastewater or household waste. Return them to a pharmacy that collects unused medicines from the public.

Pharmacist’s advice: Prospan lozenges are intended for a productive cough with mucus. Do not automatically use them for a dry, irritating cough and do not combine them with medicines that suppress the cough reflex without professional advice.
Allow each lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth after a meal and do not take it while lying down. When two lozenges are required at midday, take them one after the other, only after the first one has completely dissolved.
Contact a doctor if fever, difficulty breathing or purulent sputum develops, or if the cough lasts longer than seven days.
