What is Presolol used for and how should it be taken?
Presolol may be prescribed for hypertension, angina pectoris, supraventricular tachyarrhythmias and other selected rhythm disorders, early and maintenance treatment after myocardial infarction, symptoms of thyrotoxicosis and migraine prevention.
The dose is selected individually. The official information describes an initial dose of 100 mg daily for hypertension, 50–100 mg two or three times daily for angina, 50 mg two or three times daily for arrhythmias and 100–200 mg daily in divided doses for migraine prevention.
These doses are not instructions for self-treatment. The maximum daily dose is 400 mg, but the prescribed dose may be considerably lower.
- Take the tablets according to the exact prescribed schedule.
- Swallow with water.
- Do not change the dose after a single blood-pressure or pulse reading.
- Do not take an additional tablet for palpitations or headache.
- Do not take a double dose after a missed tablet.
Sudden withdrawal may worsen angina, increase blood pressure, trigger an arrhythmia or increase the risk of myocardial infarction.
When treatment must be discontinued, the dose is generally reduced gradually under medical supervision.
Presolol must not be used in marked bradycardia, certain heart-conduction disorders, uncontrolled heart failure, cardiogenic shock, severe hypotension, Prinzmetal angina, severe peripheral arterial disease, asthma or previous bronchospasm, untreated phaeochromocytoma or metabolic acidosis.
Particular caution is required in diabetes, peripheral circulatory disease, psoriasis, liver disease, myasthenia gravis, severe allergies and before surgery or anaesthesia.
Important interactions may occur with verapamil, diltiazem, antiarrhythmics, clonidine, digoxin, other beta blockers including eye drops, diabetes medicines, antidepressants, sedatives, antipsychotics and medicines for asthma.
Common effects include tiredness, dizziness, headache, slow heart rate, low blood pressure when standing, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
- difficulty breathing or wheezing;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- loss of consciousness;
- a very slow or irregular pulse;
- new or severe chest pain;
- sudden worsening of breathlessness or leg swelling;
- painful, pale or blue extremities.
Storage: store Presolol 50 mg below 30°C and Presolol 100 mg below 25°C, in the original packaging protected from light and moisture.
Take Presolol at the prescribed times every day. Measure blood pressure and pulse after at least five minutes of rest and keep a record of the results.
Do not skip a dose because of one low reading unless the doctor has provided precise instructions. Repeated dizziness, fainting, marked bradycardia, breathlessness or swelling requires medical assessment.
Do not automatically combine hawthorn, herbal blood-pressure products, potassium or magnesium supplements with cardiovascular therapy.
