Niacin or Vitamin B3 can also be called nicotinic acid, although it can also refer to another vitamer of vitamin B3, called nicotinamide. Vitamin B3 is necessary to support the function of many enzymes.
Niacin is very effective in normalizing blood lipid levels. People with low HDL-C supplementation experience an increase in HDL-C levels, while people with high LDL-C experience a decrease in LDL-C levels.
Triglyceride levels also drop after supplementation, making Vitamin B3 look like an excellent cardioprotective supplement on paper.
Other benefits of vitamin supplementation are thought to extend to growth, cognition and longevity. This is because niacin supplementation increases cellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels.
Preliminary evidence suggests that increased levels of NAD+ may lead to the above benefits, but much more research is needed to determine if this effect actually occurs.
