Movalis 15 mg is a prescription medicine containing the active substance meloxicam. It belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – NSAIDs, which reduce pain and inflammation affecting the joints and muscles. It is intended for adults and adolescents aged 16 years and older.
Movalis is available only with a medical prescription. This information is educational and does not replace a medical examination, diagnosis, prescribed treatment or the official patient leaflet. Do not increase the dose or combine Movalis with another NSAID painkiller unless specifically advised by a doctor.

What is Movalis used for?
Movalis is used for:
- short-term symptomatic treatment of an acute worsening of osteoarthritis;
- long-term symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis;
- long-term symptomatic treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
Movalis reduces pain and inflammation, but it does not cure the underlying cause of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.
How should Movalis be taken?
The dose must be determined by a doctor according to the diagnosis, age, other health conditions, current medicines and the individual risk of adverse effects.
| Condition | Dosage stated in the official leaflet |
|---|---|
| Acute worsening of osteoarthritis | 7.5 mg once daily; the doctor may increase the dose to 15 mg daily |
| Rheumatoid arthritis | 15 mg once daily; depending on response, the dose may be reduced to 7.5 mg |
| Ankylosing spondylitis | 15 mg once daily; depending on response, the dose may be reduced to 7.5 mg |
The total daily dose must not exceed 15 mg. In older patients, people at increased risk of adverse effects and patients with severe kidney impairment who are receiving dialysis, the doctor will usually limit the dose to 7.5 mg daily.
Take the tablet during a meal with water or another drink. The total daily dose is taken as a single dose. The tablet may be divided by hand into two equal doses; it should not be cut using a sharp object.
Who must not take Movalis?
- people allergic to meloxicam or any of the ingredients;
- people who developed asthma, hives, nasal polyps or angioedema after aspirin or another NSAID;
- patients with an active or recurrent stomach or intestinal ulcer or bleeding;
- patients with previous NSAID-related gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation;
- patients with severe liver impairment;
- patients with severe kidney failure who are not receiving dialysis;
- patients with bleeding disorders, previous cerebrovascular bleeding or other active bleeding;
- patients with severe heart failure;
- women during the last three months of pregnancy;
- children and adolescents younger than 16 years.
Movalis contains lactose. People with an intolerance to certain sugars should consult their doctor before taking it.
Important precautions
Meloxicam should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time required to control symptoms. Higher doses and prolonged treatment may increase the risk of stomach or intestinal bleeding, kidney injury, fluid retention, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
Additional caution is required in older people and in patients with dehydration, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, previous ulcers, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
Interactions with other medicines
Tell your doctor if you use:
- ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, aspirin or another NSAID;
- anticoagulants or medicines that prevent or dissolve blood clots;
- corticosteroids;
- diuretics or blood-pressure medicines;
- lithium;
- methotrexate or pemetrexed;
- ciclosporin or tacrolimus;
- SSRI antidepressants;
- trimethoprim or potassium salts;
- cholestyramine;
- certain oral diabetes medicines.
This is not a complete list. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements and herbal products you use.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Movalis must not be used during the last three months of pregnancy. During the first six months it should be used only when a doctor considers treatment absolutely necessary, at the lowest dose and for the shortest possible period.
From the 20th week of pregnancy, use for several days may affect the baby’s kidneys and a blood vessel in the baby’s heart. Use during breastfeeding is not recommended. Meloxicam may temporarily reduce female fertility.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects affect the digestive system and may include indigestion, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence and diarrhoea. Headache is also common.
Dizziness, drowsiness, anaemia, increased blood pressure, fluid retention, swelling, increased potassium, gastritis, rash, itching and changes in liver or kidney laboratory tests may occur less frequently.
- black stools, blood in the stools or vomiting blood;
- severe or sudden abdominal pain;
- difficulty breathing, choking or an asthma attack;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- blistering, peeling skin or a severe rash;
- yellowing of the skin or eyes;
- a sudden reduction in urination or severe swelling;
- chest pain, weakness on one side of the body or speech disturbance.
Driving and using machines
Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, blurred vision or another visual disturbance.
Do not add ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen or another NSAID to Movalis on your own. Combining two NSAIDs usually does not provide better pain relief, but it increases the risk of ulcers, bleeding and kidney injury. Make sure your doctor and pharmacist know if you already take aspirin for cardiovascular protection, a blood thinner, a diuretic or blood-pressure treatment.
