MEDIHONEY HCS SURGICAL – Revolutionary protection for surgical wounds

MEDIHONEY® HCS Surgical, an adhesive dressing with MANUKA HONEY, is a moist wound dressing made of Leptospermum honey (+15) combined with a hydrogel colloidal gelling agent, surrounded by an adhesive border. The gelling agent is contained within the dressing mass. As wound exudate is absorbed, the dressing—which possesses a low pH and high osmolarity—forms a gel. This maintains a moist environment for optimal wound healing, assists in autolytic debridement, and allows for non-traumatic removal. This product is an occlusive dressing and does not require a secondary dressing.

What are the indications? Under the supervision of a healthcare professional, MEDIHONEY® HCS Surgical is intended for the treatment of non-draining to lightly exuding wounds, providing a moist environment suitable for healing and promoting autolytic debridement. These dressings are indicated for:

• Surgical wounds, including those following a C-section

• Diabetic foot ulcers

• Leg ulcers (venous stasis, arterial, and mixed etiology ulcers)

• Pressure ulcers/sores (decubitus)

• First and second-degree partial-thickness burns

• Donor sites and traumatic wounds

How to use the product?

1. Cleanse the wound area as needed before application.

2. Use the appropriate number of dressings to cover the entire surgical wound. Using the ruler on the release liner, the dressing can be cut with sterile scissors, and additional dressings can be overlapped to accommodate longer wounds. The outer edge of the dressing should extend at least 1.9 cm beyond the wound margins. Discard any cut, unused portions.

3. Open the pouch and remove the dressing. Remove the protective liners (marked "1") to expose the wound-contact surface.

4. Position the dressing so the central pad fully covers the wound area and apply. Smooth all edges and corners to ensure proper adhesion to the skin.

5. Remove the top plastic layers (marked "2").

6. If exudate increases, applying a barrier cream or ointment (compatible with adhesive dressings) to the periwound area may extend wear time and prevent tissue maceration.

Changing and removing the dressing:

• Change frequency depends on the patient's condition and exudate levels.

• Reapply when the dressing reaches its absorption capacity or as directed by a wound care specialist.

• To remove: Press down on the skin with one hand and carefully lift the edge of the dressing with the other. The edge can be slightly stretched or gently rolled to release the rest of the dressing.

• Residual hydrogel/colloidal material may remain on the wound; cleanse this during the normal cleaning process between changes.

Important Information

• Contraindications: Not intended for third-degree burns or patients with a known sensitivity to honey.

• Precautions: A transient stinging sensation may occur due to the low pH. If it persists and cannot be managed with analgesics, discontinue use. High osmolarity may initially increase exudate; adjust change frequency accordingly.

• Observations: Initial increase in wound size is common due to autolytic debridement of non-viable tissue. Consult a professional if the wound continues to enlarge after several changes.
