What is Kansen used for?

  • athlete’s foot or tinea pedis;
  • fungal infection of the hands;
  • fungal infection of the trunk and limbs;
  • fungal infection of skin folds and the groin;
  • pityriasis versicolor;
  • cutaneous candidiasis;
  • external Candida infection of the vulva;
  • Candida inflammation of the glans and foreskin.

Itching, redness and scaling are not always caused by fungi. Eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, bacterial infection and irritation may produce similar symptoms. Seek professional advice when the diagnosis is uncertain.

How is the cream applied?

  1. Wash and dry your hands.
  2. Carefully wash and completely dry the affected skin.
  3. For athlete’s foot, dry particularly well between the toes.
  4. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and a small margin of surrounding skin.
  5. Rub in gently without excessive friction.
  6. Wash your hands after application unless the hands are being treated.

Apply the cream two or three times daily. Approximately half a centimetre of cream is sufficient for an area the size of the palm.

How long is treatment continued?

  • Fungal infection of the feet, hands, trunk, limbs or skin folds: three to four weeks.
  • Pityriasis versicolor: one to three weeks.
  • External genital fungal infection: one to two weeks.

Complete the recommended course even when itching, redness or scaling improves earlier. Contact a doctor when there is no improvement after the recommended treatment period.

Hygiene for athlete’s foot

  • Keep the skin between the toes clean and completely dry.
  • Change socks every day and wash them appropriately.
  • Do not share towels, footwear or bathroom mats.
  • Allow footwear to dry fully and alternate shoes when possible.
  • Avoid scratching the affected skin.
  • Wash your hands after touching infected areas.

External genital candidiasis

Kansen may be applied externally for Candida vulvitis in women and Candida balanitis in men. It does not treat an infection inside the vagina.

Condoms and diaphragms
When applied in the genital area, the cream may temporarily reduce the effectiveness and safety of latex products such as condoms and diaphragms. This effect occurs during treatment.

Who must not use Kansen?

Do not use the cream if you are allergic to clotrimazole, benzyl alcohol or another ingredient.

Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis. Benzyl alcohol may cause mild local irritation or an allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Kansen may be used during pregnancy only according to the instructions of a doctor or another healthcare professional.

It may be used during breastfeeding. When applied to the nipple area, wash the breast thoroughly before feeding.

Interactions

No clinically important medicine interactions are known. Do not independently layer several antifungal medicines, antiseptics, corticosteroids or cosmetic creams on the same area.

Possible side effects

  • burning or stinging;
  • itching, redness or rash;
  • scaling and irritation;
  • contact dermatitis;
  • blisters or hives;
  • swelling or pain at the application site;
  • tingling sensations.
Stop using the cream and seek urgent help for:
  • difficulty breathing;
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
  • fainting or a sudden fall in blood pressure;
  • severe hives or a rapidly spreading rash;
  • sudden serious worsening of the treated skin.

When is medical assessment required?

Seek advice if symptoms do not improve after the recommended course, the condition spreads quickly, pus or fever develops, the nails or scalp are affected, infections repeatedly return, or you have diabetes, impaired immunity or poor circulation.

Missed application and accidental ingestion

Apply a missed dose when remembered and continue according to the usual schedule. Do not use twice the amount.

The cream is for external use only. Rinse with water and seek medical advice if it is swallowed or enters the eyes or mouth.

Pharmacist’s advice
Treating athlete’s foot involves more than applying cream. Dry carefully between the toes, change socks every day and allow footwear to dry fully. Continue treatment for the recommended period rather than stopping as soon as itching improves. Nail involvement, painful cracks, pus or marked swelling require assessment because an ordinary skin cream may not be sufficient.
