How to remove redness on the face?
Written by: Ljubica Barbulović, MPharm
Facial redness is one of the most common problems associated with sensitive skin and may appear suddenly after sun exposure, cold weather, stress, cosmetic products or as part of certain dermatological conditions. In some people redness is temporary, while in others it becomes a daily problem accompanied by burning, itching and skin tightness.
The skin on the face is exposed every day to UV radiation, wind, pollution, temperature changes and aggressive skincare products. Because of this, irritation and damage to the skin barrier occur very easily.
People with sensitive and reactive skin are often advised to use dermatological skincare lines such as Bioderma Sensibio, La Roche-Posay, Avene and Uriage, designed to calm redness and restore the skin barrier.
Why does facial redness occur?
Facial redness occurs because blood vessels under the skin dilate and react strongly to internal or external triggers.
The most common causes include:
- sun exposure and UV radiation
- stress and emotional reactions
- cold weather and wind
- aggressive cosmetics
- rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis
- allergic reactions
- over-cleansing the skin
Burning and itchy facial redness
When redness is accompanied by burning, itching and irritation, the skin barrier is often damaged and overly reactive.
This type of skin may react to:
- water
- sunlight
- perfumes
- retinol and acids
- makeup products
How to calm facial redness?
The most important step is restoring the skin barrier and avoiding everything that additionally irritates the skin.
- gentle cleansing without alcohol
- lightweight hydration
- avoiding aggressive exfoliation
- daily SPF protection
- thermal water and soothing sprays
