Zyban is a medicine that contains bupropion, an active substance used to help people quit smoking. Bupropion works by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, reducing cravings for nicotine and relieving symptoms of withdrawal syndrome.
Usage
Zyban is usually started at 150 mg once daily for the first six days. After that, the dose is increased to 150 mg twice a day, with at least eight hours between doses. Therapy usually lasts seven to twelve weeks, and if smoking cessation is not achieved after seven weeks, the doctor may recommend stopping therapy.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Zyban can cause side effects. The most common include:
dry mouth
insomnia
headaches
nausea and vomiting
sweating
loss of appetite
More serious side effects may include:
fits of shivering
high blood pressure
changes in behavior and mood, including depression and suicidal thoughts
allergic reactions, such as rash, itching or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

Who should not use Zyban
Zyban is not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided if you have:
a history of seizures or epilepsy
bulimia or anorexia
severe liver disease
brain tumor

Also, it is not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 18 years of age.
Interactions with other drugs
Zyban can affect the effectiveness of other medicines and vice versa. Be especially careful if you are taking:
antidepressants or antipsychotics
medicines for epilepsy
steroid drugs
drugs for Parkinson's disease
drugs for HIV/AIDS
drugs for cardiac arrhythmias
Combining Zyban with nicotine products may increase the risk of high blood pressure.
Efficiency
Research shows that Zyban can increase the chances of quitting smoking by about 1.6 times compared to a placebo. However, its effectiveness may be less compared to some other drugs, such as varenicline. Combining Zyban with nicotine therapy did not show additional efficacy in increasing smoking cessation rates.
