Trittico Retard 150 mg – what is it used for and how should it be taken?
What is Trittico Retard used for?
The medicine is intended for the treatment of depressive disorders in adults, including depression:
- with or without anxiety;
- accompanied by difficulty falling asleep;
- accompanied by frequent night-time awakening or another sleep disturbance;
- associated with reduced mood, energy and everyday functioning.
Trittico Retard is not intended for patients under 18 years of age. It is not a supplement for stress and should not be used occasionally when needed.
How should Trittico Retard be taken?
The doctor determines the dose according to the type and severity of symptoms, age, general health, treatment tolerability and other medicines being taken.
- Treatment is generally started in the evening, with gradual dose adjustment.
- The medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or after food.
- Swallow the tablet with sufficient water.
- The tablet has two score lines and can be divided into three equal parts.
- Use divided portions only if this dosing schedule has been prescribed.
- Take the medicine at approximately the same time every day.
- Do not increase the dose because of one sleepless night or a temporary deterioration in mood.
The usual initial daily dose in adults may be 75–150 mg, generally administered as a single evening dose. The doctor may gradually increase the dose when necessary. This information is not an instruction for self-dosing.
If a dose is missed: take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.
Do not stop Trittico Retard suddenly, particularly after long-term use. Abrupt discontinuation may cause nausea, headache, weakness and other withdrawal symptoms. The dose should be reduced gradually according to the doctor’s plan.
Improvement in mood is not immediate. Medical monitoring is required during the first weeks because depression, behaviour or suicidal thoughts may worsen before the full therapeutic effect develops.
When should Trittico Retard not be taken?
Do not take the medicine:
- if you are allergic to trazodone or any of the other ingredients;
- after excessive alcohol consumption;
- if you are dependent on hypnotic medicines;
- shortly after a myocardial infarction;
- if you are under 18 years of age;
- during pregnancy or breastfeeding without an individual medical assessment.
Special warnings and precautions
Before starting treatment, tell the doctor if you have:
- epilepsy or previous seizures;
- liver or kidney disease;
- heart disease, an abnormal heart rhythm or prolonged QT interval;
- low blood pressure or fainting when standing up;
- hyperthyroidism;
- difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate;
- angle-closure glaucoma;
- schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or another psychiatric condition;
- a history of suicidal thoughts, self-harm or a suicide attempt.
Older people may be more sensitive to drowsiness, dizziness and a fall in blood pressure when standing up. Rise slowly from a bed or chair.
Suicidal thoughts and behavioural changes
Depression itself is associated with a risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. The risk may remain present or temporarily increase at the beginning of treatment before the full effect of the medicine develops.
The patient, family member or caregiver should immediately contact a doctor if they notice:
- worsening depression or anxiety;
- suicidal thoughts or plans to self-harm;
- unusual aggression, irritability or agitation;
- a sudden change in behaviour;
- manic behaviour, marked euphoria or a greatly reduced need for sleep.
Interactions with medicines and supplements
Tell the doctor about all medicines, herbal products and food supplements. Important interactions include:
- other antidepressants and medicines that increase serotonin activity;
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors;
- tricyclic antidepressants;
- fluoxetine and other serotonergic medicines;
- antipsychotics, sedatives, hypnotics and anxiolytics;
- sedating antihistamines;
- medicines that prolong the QT interval;
- erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and other CYP3A4 inhibitors;
- carbamazepine, phenytoin and barbiturates;
- warfarin, anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines;
- blood-pressure-lowering medicines;
- digoxin, clonidine and levodopa.
Do not independently combine trazodone with St John’s wort, 5-HTP, tryptophan or SAM-e. These combinations may increase serotonergic activity and the risk of serious adverse reactions.
Alcohol and driving
Alcohol increases the sedative effects of trazodone and should be avoided during treatment.
The medicine may cause drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, confusion or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Trittico Retard may be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only when the doctor considers treatment necessary and under strict medical supervision.
Do not stop treatment independently after learning that you are pregnant. Abrupt discontinuation of psychiatric treatment may also involve risks, so the decision must be made by a doctor.
Possible side effects
The frequency of individual adverse effects cannot always be estimated precisely. Possible effects include:
- drowsiness, sedation, fatigue or dizziness;
- headache, tremor or reduced attention;
- blurred vision;
- nausea, vomiting, dry mouth or constipation;
- diarrhoea, abdominal pain or indigestion;
- low blood pressure, particularly when standing up;
- a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat;
- changes in appetite or body weight;
- insomnia, nervousness, agitation or nightmares;
- changes in sexual desire;
- rash and allergic reactions;
- changes in blood-cell counts, liver function or blood sodium levels.
Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help if any of the following occurs:
- suicidal thoughts, attempted self-harm or a sudden behavioural change;
- a prolonged and painful erection – priapism;
- yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes;
- manic behaviour or a pronounced deterioration in mental condition;
- difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, tongue or throat;
- fainting or a strong or irregular heartbeat;
- high temperature, confusion, heavy sweating, rapid pulse and muscle spasms;
- seizures;
- a severe sore throat and high temperature, which may indicate a blood disorder.
Serotonin syndrome
Serotonin syndrome is a potentially dangerous reaction that may occur particularly when trazodone is combined with other serotonergic medicines or supplements. Signs may include agitation, confusion, hallucinations, a rapid heartbeat, sweating, diarrhoea, high temperature and muscle spasms or twitching.
If more medicine has been taken than prescribed
An overdose may cause pronounced drowsiness, vomiting, dizziness, abnormal heart rhythm, breathing difficulties, seizures, low blood pressure or serotonin syndrome. Symptoms may be delayed for several hours.
Contact emergency medical services or the nearest hospital immediately and take the medicine pack with you. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
How to store Trittico Retard
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store below 25°C.
- Keep in the original packaging.
- Do not use after the expiry date.
- Return unused medicine to a pharmacy that collects pharmaceutical waste.
Composition
Each prolonged-release tablet contains 150 mg of trazodone hydrochloride, equivalent to 136.6 mg of trazodone.
The other ingredients are carnauba wax, magnesium stearate, povidone and sucrose. Patients with an intolerance to certain sugars should consult a doctor before use.
Take Trittico Retard exactly according to the prescribed schedule. Do not independently increase the evening dose because of insomnia and do not stop treatment suddenly when you begin to feel better.
Do not introduce melatonin, valerian, passionflower, St John’s wort, 5-HTP, tryptophan, SAM-e or other sleep and mood products without professional advice. Some may increase sedation, while others may increase the serotonergic effects of trazodone.
A family member or close person should know to contact the doctor if they notice a sudden deterioration in mood, suicidal thoughts, unusual behaviour or pronounced agitation.
Trittico Retard is available only on prescription. Current availability and price should be checked directly with a pharmacy. This information page does not constitute an offer for the online sale of the medicine.
