During the 1950s, the introduction of preservatives in ophthalmic products to prevent contamination after opening was a significant advance. Forty years later, numerous publications have shown the harmful effects of preservatives on the cornea, conjunctiva and tear film, causing dry eye, inflammation and irritation. In the 1990s, Thea invented the first multi-dose bottle capable of dispensing preservative-free eye drops, ABAK, which pioneered a number of preservative-free packaging forms such as Steri-free® and Easy Grip® technology.

Thanks to Thea, ophthalmology has entered a preservative-free era, allowing patients to benefit from a full range of eye care treatments that respect their visual potential.
