Palin was a medicine in the form of hard capsules containing pipemidic acid 200 mg (as the trihydrate). Pipemidic acid belongs to the older quinolone antibiotics and acts as a urinary antiseptic.
According to the last approved Summary of Product Characteristics, Palin was used for infections of the lower urinary tract caused by susceptible micro-organisms. It was a prescription-only medicine. The information comes from official ALIMS documents.
What was Palin used for and how are urinary tract infections treated in Serbia today?

What was Palin used for?
- acute and chronic infections of the lower urinary tract (bladder and urethra);
- prevention of recurrent infections of the lower urinary tract.
The medicine acted only on micro-organisms susceptible to pipemidic acid. The dose and duration of treatment were set by the doctor.
Important safety information from the official documents
- Contraindications: hypersensitivity to pipemidic acid or other quinolone antibiotics; children and adolescents during the growth period.
- Adequate fluid intake was needed during treatment; in severe kidney impairment the dose was reduced.
- Caution in epilepsy (seizures very rarely), in people over 70 years, in porphyria and G6PD deficiency; avoid sunbathing and UV light (photosensitivity).
- Antacids containing aluminium, magnesium or calcium and sucralfate reduce absorption – a 2–3 hour interval is needed. Pipemidic acid increases theophylline and caffeine levels, may increase the effect of warfarin, and with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs the risk of seizures rises.
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding: use was not recommended.
- Dizziness and visual disturbances are possible – take care when driving.
- The most common side effects were mild gastrointestinal ones (nausea, stomach discomfort); with signs of allergy, a severe skin reaction or seizures, treatment had to be stopped immediately.
What is available in Serbia?
Medicines containing pipemidic acid are no longer registered in Serbia. Other antibiotics are registered for urinary tract infections, and the choice depends on the type of infection, the urine culture result, sex, pregnancy and other conditions – so treatment is decided only by the doctor.
| Option | What it is | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Examination and urine culture | identifying the cause and antibiotic susceptibility | the basis for choosing a suitable antibiotic |
| Antibiotic chosen by the doctor | registered medicines for urinary tract infections | dispensed on prescription |
| D-mannose, cranberry, intimate care | food supplements and cosmetics | not medicines; they do not treat an acute infection |
When to seek medical help immediately?
- fever, chills and pain in the side or lower back (possible kidney infection)
- blood in the urine or inability to pass urine
- a urinary tract infection during pregnancy or in a child
- swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, a blistering rash or seizures
Pharmacist's advice
Recurrent urinary infections deserve an examination and a urine culture, not self-treatment with an antibiotic left over at home. If you still have a pack of Palin, do not use it – return it to a pharmacy.
During treatment prescribed by your doctor, drink enough fluids and do not stop treatment as soon as the symptoms improve.
Availability and price

Frequently asked questions
Can Palin be bought in Serbia?
No. The authorisation for Palin ceased on 30 April 2019 and the medicine cannot be obtained from pharmacies in Serbia.
Is there a medicine with the same substance as Palin?
No. No medicine containing pipemidic acid is registered in Serbia today. For urinary infections the doctor chooses another antibiotic.
Why were antacids not to be taken with Palin?
According to the official documents, antacids containing aluminium, magnesium or calcium and sucralfate considerably reduce the absorption of quinolones, so an interval of 2 to 3 hours was needed between them.
Can D-mannose or cranberry replace an antibiotic?
No. These are food supplements that do not treat an acute urinary tract infection. If you have symptoms of an infection, please see a doctor.
