Movalis is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIL) containing the active substance meloxicam. It is used to treat pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Composition
Each tablet of Movalis contains:
Meloxicam: 15 mg
Excipients include sodium citrate, lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K25, silicon dioxide, colloidal, anhydrous, crospovidone and magnesium stearate.
Indications
Movalis is indicated for:
Short-term symptomatic treatment of exacerbations of osteoarthritis.
Long-term symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Dosage
Osteoarthritis: The recommended dose is 7.5 mg per day. In case of severe disease, the dose can be increased to 15 mg per day.
Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis: The recommended dose is 15 mg per day, with the possibility of reducing it to 7.5 mg per day, depending on the response to therapy.
Movalis tablets should be taken with a meal, with water or other liquid.
Contraindications
Movalis must not be used in the following cases:
Hypersensitivity to meloxicam or any excipient.
Hypersensitivity to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as acetylsalicylic acid.
Active peptic ulcer or recurrent ulcer in the anamnesis.
Severe impairment of liver or kidney function.
Bleeding from the digestive system, cerebrovascular bleeding or other bleeding.
Severe uncontrolled heart failure.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Adverse effects
Possible side effects include:
Very common: indigestion (dyspepsia), nausea, stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, diarrhoea.
Common: headache.
Occasional: dizziness, vertigo, drowsiness, anemia, increased blood pressure, hot flashes, sodium and water retention, increased potassium concentration (hyperkalemia), belching, gastritis, bleeding in the digestive tract, stomatitis, allergic reactions, itching, skin rash, edema caused by fluid retention, angioedema, temporary disturbance of liver function test values, disturbances of laboratory tests of kidney function.
Rare: mood disorders, nightmares, blood count disorders, tinnitus, palpitations, peptic ulcers, esophagitis, asthma attack, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, conjunctivitis, colitis.
Very rare: skin blistering reactions, erythema multiforme, hepatitis, acute renal failure, intestinal wall perforation, agranulocytosis.
Use in the elderly
For the elderly, if kidney function has not been damaged, the same dose as for adults is recommended. However, increasing the dose should be done with caution, as elderly people may be more sensitive to the cardiovascular effects of blood pressure-lowering drugs.
Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding
Movalis is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless the doctor judges that the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or newborn.
