MORPHINE HYDROCHLORIDE ALKALOID

Morphine hydrochloride is a drug that contains the active substance morphine hydrochloride and is used to treat severe and very severe pain.

Composition

Each ampoule (1 ml) of solution for injection contains:

20 mg morphine hydrochloride (trihydrate)

Excipients include:

Water for injections

Indications

Morphine Hydrochloride Alkaloid is indicated for:

Symptomatic relief of severe acute and chronic pain

Alleviation of dyspnea in left ventricular failure and pulmonary edema

Preanesthetic medication

Dosage

The dose of the drug should be individualized, depending on the severity of the pain, general condition and body weight of the patient. The usual dose for adults is:

10 mg/70 kg of body weight (range 5–20 mg), administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously, every 4–6 hours, if necessary.

Subcutaneous injection is not suitable in patients with edema. Intramuscular administration is recommended when repeated dosing is necessary, as repeated subcutaneous administration may cause local tissue irritation, pain and induration.

Intravenous administration may be indicated if a faster effect is required. The usual intravenous dose is 5 mg, injected slowly every 4 hours (or more often during titration), if necessary.

Rapid intravenous injection of opioid analgesics, including morphine, increases the incidence of adverse effects. Morphine should not be administered intravenously unless opioid antagonists and devices for resuscitation and respiratory control are not immediately available. When morphine is administered parenterally, especially intravenously, the patient should be in the supine position.

Contraindications

Morphine Hydrochloride Alkaloid should not be used if:

There is an allergy to morphine or any of the excipients

The patient suffers from acute or severe respiratory insufficiency

There is acute alcoholism

The patient has severe head injuries or increased intracranial pressure

There is paralytic ileus or severe liver or kidney dysfunction

Adverse effects

Possible side effects include:

Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth and decreased appetite

The central nervous system may react with dizziness, drowsiness, headache, confusion, euphoria, hallucinations and reduced concentration.

The cardiovascular system may react with reduced blood pressure, rapid or slow pulse, facial flushing and sweating.

Respiratory disorders, including slow breathing and bronchospasm

The urinary system may react by retaining urine

Allergic reactions can include rash, itching and swelling

Long-term use can lead to to the development of tolerance and physical dependence

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy: Morphine Hydrochloride Alkaloid is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, due to possible effects on the fetus

Breast-feeding: Morphine is excreted in breast milk and may cause serious side effects in the newborn. Use during breastfeeding is not recommended

Storage of medicine

The medicine should be stored at a temperature of up to 25°C, out of the reach of children, in the original packaging to protect it from light. Do not use after the expiration date stated on the package.
