Gino-daktanol vaginal suppositories (pessaries) contain miconazole (as miconazole nitrate, 200 mg per suppository). Miconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal of the imidazole group with additional antibacterial action: it kills fungi and some Gram-positive bacilli and cocci.
According to the patient leaflet, Gino-daktanol is used to treat fungal infections of the vagina, whose signs include itching, redness and a whitish discharge. The marketing authorisation holder is Galenika AD Belgrade.

What is Gino-daktanol used for?
Gino-daktanol vaginal suppositories are used to treat fungal infections of the vagina. Signs of these infections are itching, redness and a whitish discharge. The suppositories kill the fungi causing the infection, as well as some of the bacteria that may also be present.
How is it used and dosed?
| Dose | When | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1 suppository a day | every evening before bedtime, deep into the vagina | 7 consecutive days without interruption – also during menstruation |
- The medicine is for vaginal (local) use only.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before use.
- Do not stop treatment when itching and other signs of inflammation disappear after a few days – symptoms may return.
- During treatment, do not insert other vaginal suppositories or a diaphragm into the vagina and avoid tampons.
- If you feel the effect is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor.
Special patient groups
- Children: Gino-daktanol is not used in children.
- Partner: if the partner is also infected, he may need treatment too, to avoid re-infection.
- Women on anticoagulant therapy: the doctor may check the effect of warfarin during treatment.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Do not use Gino-daktanol:
- if you are allergic to miconazole nitrate, other similar antifungals (imidazole derivatives) or the excipient (hard fat H-15);
- if you have previously had an allergic reaction to Gino-daktanol vaginal suppositories.
Warnings and precautions
Before and during use, note the following:
- severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported with miconazole products – if hypersensitivity or irritation occurs, treatment should be stopped;
- do not use latex condoms or diaphragms at the same time;
- take measures to prevent spreading the infection – do not let others use your underwear or towels;
- the medicine does not stain skin or clothing.
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
Because absorption after vaginal use is low, clinically significant interactions are very rare. Nevertheless, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you use:
- oral anticoagulants, e.g. warfarin – their effect needs monitoring;
- medicines for diabetes (oral hypoglycaemics) or phenytoin;
- simvastatin or lovastatin;
- calcium channel blockers (e.g. dihydropyridines, verapamil).
With these medicines, miconazole may increase their effect and the frequency of side effects. Avoid contact of the suppositories with latex products.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Pregnancy: miconazole is absorbed into the bloodstream only to a very small extent. Animal studies showed no harmful effects, but the doctor weighs benefits and risks and decides whether you can use the medicine.
- Breast-feeding: it is not known whether miconazole passes into breast milk – caution is needed.
Driving and using machines
Gino-daktanol has no influence on the ability to drive or use machines.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Gino-daktanol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
- Very common (more than 1 in 10): genital itching, vaginal discomfort and burning.
- Common (up to 1 in 10): skin rash, menstrual pain.
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): itchy rash, hives.
- Not known: hypersensitivity including anaphylactic reactions, itching, angioedema, vaginal irritation, pelvic cramps, application-site irritation.
Vaginal discharge and bleeding, vaginal pain, headache, painful urination, urinary tract infection, abdominal pain, rosacea, facial swelling and nausea were also reported in clinical studies, but a causal relationship with the medicine was not established.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose / accidental swallowing: if someone accidentally swallows a suppository, seek medical advice immediately.
- Missed dose: do not use a double dose; use the next dose at the usual time and continue as scheduled.
- Stopping treatment: continue for as long as the doctor prescribed – if you stop early, symptoms may come back.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing (possible anaphylaxis or angioedema);
- widespread rash or hives after use;
- severe lower abdominal pain, fever or unusual vaginal bleeding;
- symptoms that do not improve or return after the treatment is completed.
Pharmacist's advice
Insert the suppository deep into the vagina in the evening, just before sleep, as the leaflet instructs – the medicine then works during the night. Complete all 7 days, including during your period; use sanitary pads instead of tampons during treatment.
Do not rely on latex condoms or diaphragms for contraception or protection during treatment, as the medicine may damage them. If the infection keeps coming back, see a gynaecologist – the partner may need treatment or further tests may be needed.
